TL;DR: Two factors with available worldwide data—the prevalence of early childhood stunting and the number of people living in absolute poverty—are identified as indicators of poor development and show that both indicators are closely associated with poor cognitive and educational performance in children.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used data from Young Lives, which is an observational cohort of 8062 children in Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam, to determine whether changes in growth after infancy are associated with schooling and cognitive achievement at age 8 y.

TL;DR: The consequences of the overnight and morning fast, particularly among the children who were nutritionally at risk, included slower stimulus discrimination, increased errors, and slower memory recall and it is proposed that these alterations result from a state of metabolic stress in which homeostatic mechanisms work to maintain circulating glucose concentrations.

TL;DR: In this article, the reliability and validity of each of the cognitive development and achievement tests administered for each age cohort within each country (Ethiopia, Peru, India and Vietnam) was investigated.
Abstract: The main goal of the analysis presented in this paper is to establish the reliability and validity of each of the cognitive development and achievement tests administered for each age cohort within each country (Ethiopia, Peru, India and Vietnam). In this process, the items with the best psychometric properties are different across countries. Therefore, we do not carry out international comparisons of results in this paper but suggest that the test results should be used for analysis within countries (even within countries, different language groups rely on different combinations of items to establish their ability). However, the general construct measured by each test is the same across countries. Hence, a comparison of the relationships between achievement and other variables across countries is a possibility. In order to get indicators of reliability and validity, we used current standards on psychometrics to guide the analyses.

TL;DR: It is plausible that among stunted children, being relatively overweight (by the weight-for-height index) poses a cognitive risk that can be partially reversed by a school breakfast, as indicated by a positive and significant weight x treatment interaction.
Abstract: A randomized, controlled trial measured the short-term impact of the Peruvian school breakfast programme on the diet, school attendance, and cognition of fourth- and fifth-graders. Ten schools on the rural outskirts of the Andean city of Huaraz were randomly assigned to a control or a treatment group. The programme significantly increased (p <.01) dietary intakes of energy by 15.2%, protein by 16.1%, and iron by 60%, and improved rates of attendance. Analysis of covariance also showed improved performance on a vocabulary test among heavier children, as indicated by a positive and significant weight x treatment interaction (parameter = 0.37; F = 4.97; p < .05). It is plausible that among stunted children, being relatively overweight (by the weight-for-height index) poses a cognitive risk that can be partially reversed by a school breakfast.

TL;DR: The high mortality and disease burden resulting from these nutrition-related factors make a compelling case for the urgent implementation of interventions to reduce their occurrence or ameliorate their consequences.

TL;DR: It is estimated that undernutrition in the aggregate--including fetal growth restriction, stunting, wasting, and deficiencies of vitamin A and zinc along with suboptimum breastfeeding--is a cause of 3·1 million child deaths annually or 45% of all child deaths in 2011.
