Journal ArticleDOI

Energetics of stalk intermediates in membrane fusion are controlled by lipid composition

TL;DR: The results indicate that facilitating dehydration is the key to promote stalk formation, which becomes favorable at an approximately constant interbilayer separation of 9.0 ± 0.5 Å for the investigated lipid compositions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Membrane fusion intermediates and the effect of cholesterol: an in-house X-ray scattering study.

TL;DR: AnX-ray scattering setup which allows to study membrane fusion intermediates or other nonlamellar lipid mesophases by laboratory-scale X-ray sources alone, thus taking advantage of unrestricted beamtime compared to synchrotron sources is developed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interbilayer repulsion forces between tension-free lipid bilayers from simulation.

TL;DR: The repulsion between tension-free membranes can be determined from MD simulations by either simulating membrane stacks under different hydration conditions (unrestrained setup) and monitoring the change in the area per lipid upon dehydration or (ii) simulating two single punctured membranes immersed in a water reservoir and controlling the center-of-mass distance between the bilayers using an external potential (umbrella sampling setup).
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of PIP2 on bilayer structure and phase behavior of DOPC: an X-ray scattering study.

TL;DR: Electron-density profiles reconstructed from X-ray reflectivity measurements indicate that PIP(2) strongly affects structural parameters such as lipid head-group width, bilayer thickness, and lamellar repeat spacing of DOPC bilayer stacks, and coexistence of two lamellars phases with different lattice constants is observed in single-component PIP (2) samples.
Journal ArticleDOI

COVID-19 in South Africa: outbreak despite interventions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the impact of interventions on outbreak dynamics for South Africa, exhibiting the largest case numbers across sub-saharan Africa, before and after their national lockdown.
