A correlation of tectonic units of the Alpine-Carpathian-Dinaridic system of orogens, including the substrate of the Pannonian and Transylvanian basins, is presented in the form of a map. Combined with a series of crustal-scale cross sections this correlation of tectonic units yields a clearer picture of the three-dimensional architecture of this system of orogens that owes its considerable complexity to multiple overprinting of earlier by younger deformations.

Measurement. Heat flow measurements in Lake Biwa were first carried out in 1971 using a 197.2 m deep borehole drilled in the middle of the lake by Kyoto University (Uyeda et at. 1973) . They showed that the heat flow value in Lake Biwa was about 50 mW/m2, and suggested that the low heat flow zone is extended from the Seto Inland Sea region to Lake Biwa. Recently, the Kyoto University group (chief scientist, Prof. S. Hone) has successfully carried out the project of drilling a deep borehole in the central part of Lake Biwa in order to sample a long core of bottom sediments. This borehole reached the depth of 1422.5 m below the lake bottom and provided a good opportunity for measuring the heat flow value in the lake. The present paper reports the heat flow measured in this hole. The temperature gradient was measured to the depth of about 1000 m by using the buried thermistor method (Honda et at. 1982) and thermistors were set at every 20 m on a cable. Temperature measurements in the borehole were made from 2 to 8 May, 1983. Measurements began 4 days after the cessation of drilling, and the last measurement was made 10 days after the cessation of drilling. But valid measurements were made on 2, 6, 7 and 8, May. Fig. 1 shows the observed temperatures in the first and the last measurement of 2 and 8, May plotted against the depth below the lake bottom. Probably because of the circulation of drilling fluid, the temperature in the top sediments (shallower than 250 m) was not stable. In contrast, in a deeper part (>350 m) of the borehole, the observed temperatures are almost always stable. Therefore, in the shallower part, original temperatures at various depths are estimated by the following relation (Jaeger 1961) T =To-(gl4nK) log (8/t+e) where To is the original temperature, q is the heat generation or absorption per unit length and unit time, K is the thermal conductivity, B is the measurement time after the cessation of drilling, and t is the duration of drilling at each depth (= period of drilling fluid circulation). Fig. 2 shows estimated original temperatures at various depths. In Fig. 2, five sets of temperature records (0800PM, 2, 0100PM, 6, 1000PM, 6, 1000PM, 7 and 0600AM, 8, May) are used to calculate original temperatures assuming t=100 days. The whole drilling operation lasted for about 350 days, but from the logging records, we estimated that the period of drilling fluid circulation was about one-third of the whole
