TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the as-synthesized CuO(50%)–ZnO( 50%) NCs act as a promising low-cost NO2 sensor and further confirm their potential toward tunable gas sensors (electrochemical and solid state).
Abstract: A simple one-step chemical method is employed for the successful synthesis of CuO(50%)–ZnO(50%) nanocomposites (NCs) and investigation of their gas sensing properties. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed that these CuO–ZnO NCs display a hexagonal wurtzite-type crystal structure. The average width of 50–100 nm and length of 200–600 nm of the NCs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopic images, and the 1:1 proportion of Cu and Zn composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive spectra, i.e., CuO(50%)–ZnO(50%) NC studies. The CuO(50%)–ZnO(50%) NCs exhibit superior gas sensing performance with outstanding selectivity toward NO2 gas at a working temperature of 200 °C. Moreover, these NCs were used for the indirect evaluation of NO2 via electrochemical detection of NO2– (as NO2 converts into NO2– once it reacts with moisture, resulting into acid rain, i.e., indirect evaluation of NO2). As compared with other known modified electrodes, CuO(50%)–ZnO(50%) NCs show an apparent oxidation of NO2– with a ...

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, a type of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) employing a hydroxide ion-conductive polymer, quaternary ammonium polysulphone, as alkaline electrolyte and nonprecious metals, chromium-decorated nickel and silver, as the catalyst for the negative and positive electrodes, respectively.
Abstract: In recent decades, fuel cell technology has been undergoing revolutionary developments, with fundamental progress being the replacement of electrolyte solutions with polymer electrolytes, making the device more compact in size and higher in power density. Nowadays, acidic polymer electrolytes, typically Nafion, are widely used. Despite great success, fuel cells based on acidic polyelectrolyte still depend heavily on noble metal catalysts, predominantly platinum (Pt), thus increasing the cost and hampering the widespread application of fuel cells. Here, we report a type of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) employing a hydroxide ion-conductive polymer, quaternary ammonium polysulphone, as alkaline electrolyte and nonprecious metals, chromium-decorated nickel and silver, as the catalyst for the negative and positive electrodes, respectively. In addition to the development of a high-performance alkaline polymer electrolyte particularly suitable for fuel cells, key progress has been achieved in catalyst tailoring: The surface electronic structure of nickel has been tuned to suppress selectively the surface oxidative passivation with retained activity toward hydrogen oxidation. This report of a H2–O2 PEFC completely free from noble metal catalysts in both the positive and negative electrodes represents an important advancement in the research and development of fuel cells.

TL;DR: This mini-review focuses on the recent advances in noble-metal-based HER electrocatalysts, and the synthesis strategies to enhance cost-effectiveness and the catalytic activity for HER are highlighted.
Abstract: Noble metal (Pt, Ru, and Ir)-based electrocatalysts are currently considered the most active materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although they have been associated with high cost, easy agglomeration, and poor stability during the HER reaction, recent efforts to intentionally tailor noble-metal-based catalysts have led to promising improvements, with lower cost and superior activity, which are critical to achieving large-scale production of pure hydrogen. In this mini-review, we focus on the recent advances in noble-metal-based HER electrocatalysts. In particular, the synthesis strategies to enhance cost-effectiveness and the catalytic activity for HER are highlighted.

TL;DR: The observed photoelectrochemical activity of the 2D-COF films and their photocorrosion stability in water pave the way for a novel class of photoabsorber materials with versatile optical and electronic properties that are tunable through the selection of appropriate building blocks and their three-dimensional stacking.
Abstract: Light-driven water electrolysis at a semiconductor surface is a promising way to generate hydrogen from sustainable energy sources, but its efficiency is limited by the performance of available photoabsorbers. Here we report the first time investigation of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as a new class of photoelectrodes. The presented 2D-COF structure is assembled from aromatic amine-functionalized tetraphenylethylene and thiophene-based dialdehyde building blocks to form conjugated polyimine sheets, which π-stack in the third dimension to create photoactive porous frameworks. Highly oriented COF films absorb light in the visible range to generate photoexcited electrons that diffuse to the surface and are transferred to the electrolyte, resulting in proton reduction and hydrogen evolution. The observed photoelectrochemical activity of the 2D-COF films and their photocorrosion stability in water pave the way for a novel class of photoabsorber materials with versatile optical and electronic properties that are tunable through the selection of appropriate building blocks and their three-dimensional stacking.
