TL;DR: In this paper, a navigation system including a present-position sensing system for sensing a present position; information storage medium for storing map information; an input device for entering into the system the destination, a roundabout point, a bypass, and the location desired to be traversed for entry of input indicating the execution of a route search from the present position sensed by the present-sensing system to the destination; an output device for outputting information route guidance; and a central processing unit including a route searching capability for searching for a route to destination; a route storage capability for
Abstract: A navigation system including a present-position sensing system for sensing a present position; information storage medium for storing map information; an input device for entering into the system the destination, a roundabout point, a bypass, and the location desired to be traversed for entry of input indicating the execution of a route search from the present position sensed by the present-position sensing system to the destination; an output device for outputting information route guidance; and a central processing unit including a route searching capability for searching for a route to the destination; a route storage capability for provisionally storing the identified route; and route guidance control for sending a signal for performing route guidance to the output device. When the roundabout point or bypass is entered in the system, a search cost for roads and intersections near to the roundabout point or bypass is raised so that route search processing can be performed. When the location desired to be traversed is set, roads near to the location desired to be traversed are retrieved for search purposes. In travel guidance, a present-position mark is displayed in either a continuous mode or a blinking mode depending on the state of travel.

TL;DR: In this paper, a route guidance section compares the current position provided by a current position determination section and the route provided by route calculation section for detecting an off-route condition, and when the off route condition is detected, a researching key as well as the route and current place is displayed on a display section.
Abstract: A route guidance section compares the current position provided by a current position determination section and the route provided by a route calculation section for detecting an off-route condition. When the off-route condition is detected, a researching key as well as the route and current place is displayed on a display section. When the researching key is touched, a search is again made for a new route from the current position to the destination. Then, route guidance is again started in response to the researching result. When the researching key is not touched, the route and current place continue to be displayed while the vehicle carrying the apparatus travles off route, thereby efficiently preventing the apparatus from executing unnecessary researching when the driver drives the vehicle off route on purpose.

TL;DR: In this paper, a route-calculating section is provided for re-calculated the route, and a route guide control system is also provided, including a route deviation-detecting section.
Abstract: Geographical, guide or search information and route information are stored in storage sections. An arithmetic section provides a route researching function with preference for the traveling direction of a vehicle. A route-calculating section is provided for re-calculating the route, and a route guide control system is also provided, inclusive of a route deviation-detecting section. The re-calculating section calculates either the shortest route from the point of deviation to the previous route or a new route to the destination. In case of the search of the shortest route to the previous route, the shortest route from the present location to the previous route is searched giving preference to the traveling direction, e.g. avoidance of a U-turn, on the basis of the search information relating to the immediate vicinity of the present location, so that the route to rejoin the previous route can be quickly calculated. In case of search of a new route, the whole route from the present location to the destination is searched, again giving weight to the present traveling direction, on the basis of the search information relating to the area between the present location and the destination, to guide the driver along a new route completely different from the previous one.

TL;DR: In this article, a volume control screen is displayed on a display section 28 where the user adjusts the volume by touching the screen, and when the user terminates volume adjustment, the voice control section 30 outputs a voice for volume confirmation or check at the adjusted volume through the speaker.
Abstract: An apparatus to facilitate volume control for route aural guidance. When supplying a guidance voice to a loudspeaker 34a, a voice control section 30 disconnects the loudspeaker 34a from audio and outputs the guidance voice through the loudspeaker. A volume control screen is displayed on a display section 28 where the user adjusts the volume by touching the screen. When the voice control section 30 switches a signal to the loudspeaker 34a, a mute circuit 40a is operated to mute the voice output before the voice is output through the loudspeaker 34a. When the user terminates volume adjustment, the voice control section 30 outputs a voice for volume confirmation or check at the adjusted volume through the loudspeaker 34a. The user can check the adjusted volume at this time.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a voice route-guidance system for vehicles which terminates its route guidance when the vehicle arrives at the destination and even if the present position of the vehicle is measured with low accuracy.
Abstract: A voice route-guidance system for vehicles which terminates its route-guidance when the vehicle arrives at the destination and even if the present position of the vehicle is measured with low accuracy. An approach judging unit judges that the vehicle approaches a point spaced apart from a destination by a predetermined distance. A guidance termination judging unit further judges whether or not there is a point in which the route-guidance should be carried out between the present vehicle position and the destination. From these judgments, the system judges that the vehicle approaches the point spaced apart from the destination by the predetermined distance and also that all the route-guidance has been terminated. Thus, a termination unit terminates the route-guidance.

TL;DR: An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context, is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context. The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation that may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a video cassette recorder (VCR), medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

TL;DR: In this paper, a vehicle information system which includes an in-vehicle system 105 and a centralized server system 120. In this system, the operator specifies a destination to the server system which validates the destination.
Abstract: A vehicle information system which includes an in-vehicle system 105 and a centralized server system 120 . The in-vehicle system communicates with the server system using a wireless communication link 110 , such as over a cellular telephone system. A position system, such as a set of GPS satellites 140 , provides positioning signals that are used by the in-vehicle systems, and optionally by the centralized server system to increase the accuracy of position estimates. In one version of the system, an operator specifies a destination to an in-vehicle system which validates the destination. The in-vehicle system transmits specification of the destination to a server system 125 at the centralized server. The server system computes a route to the destination and transmits the computed route to the in-vehicle system. The in-vehicle system guides the operator along the route. If the in-vehicle system detects that the vehicle has deviated from the planned route, it replans a new route to the destination using an in-vehicle map database.
