The impact of building information modelling on estimating practice: analysis of perspectives from four organizational business models

Methodology for upstream estimation of construction waste for new building projects

676 Errors entail different meanings and usages depending on how it is conceptualized. The purpose of this paper is to determine the causes, effects and remedies of the errors in Nigerian construction documents. A structured questionnaire was administered on ninety consultants (Builders, architects, engineers and quantity surveyors) obtained from regulatory bodies of each profession. Forty four questionnaires were returned and this gives a response rate of 49%. The findings of the research show that clients are the major stakeholders responsible for the generation of errors in Nigerian construction documents. The causes of the errors are lack of adequate documentation, poor communication, negligence and changes to specifications among others and the effects on construction projects include project abandonment, delays, rework, dissatisfaction by project owners and lack of confidence in project consultants. The suggested solutions include provision of comprehensive information, good communication among project teams, effective and efficient project management, constructability, design review management and adequate financial provision. The study recommends that clients should allow adequate time for the preparation of construction documents and adopt appropriate procurement method. Causes, effects and remedies of errors in Nigerian construction documents

Historically, the formal form of Bills of Quantities (BQ) was introduced in the United Kingdom after the
Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century. They were mainly used by master tradesmen for paying their workmen and
claiming payments from building owners by submitting it as partisan Final Account. BQ are widely used in most of the
Commonwealth countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Nigeria,
Kenya, the Middle Eastern countries etc. particularly in the traditional procurement system. BQ are mainly used for cost
estimating and more importantly, as part of tender document for use in soliciting competitive tenders from contractors. They
are also compiled together with contract form to form a contract document. However, as construction industry evolved and
changed technologically, economically, legally and procedurally, so is the use of BQs in construction projects. It has been
the subject of scrutiny and criticisms by the construction community. It was highlighted that the use of BQ in the UK
construction industry is declining and it is possible that they will vanish from the industry in the near future. In 1991 the
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors revealed that between 1984 and 1989 the usage of s in building works in the UK
declined in value to almost 10%. Several reasons were given for such a situation. These include the lack of use by the project
teams, its limited use after the tendering process and the increased use of more “advanced” non-traditional procurement
system by the industry. That was the situation and prediction made twenty years ago. The question now “What is the
situation in our construction industry today? Are BQ still relevant today, especially when more and more projects are
contracted out using the non-traditional procurement systems? Are they still useful to the clients, architects, engineers and
contractors throughout the construction process? This paper looks at the issue of BQ, their weakness and potential in the
construction industry

Framework Considerations for Community Resilient Towards Disaster in Malaysia

The study develops a new instrument in measuring the validity of the questionnaire in technology banking applications using the Rasch model as an alternative method. Usually, classical method, the Cronbach alpha (α), is used to prove the validity of the instrument. In addition, the Rasch measurement model is also capable of providing guidance to proof quality items to strengthen the legitimacy of the survey instrument. Questionnaire consisting of 28 items and using a 5-level Likert scale with very unimportant to very important as the form of semantic differential was distributed to 223 respondents. Bond and Fox software analysis showed different response patterns to construct items that were measured in the same logit. Findings show the more widespread application of Rasch models would lead to a stronger justification of measurement particularly in cross-cultural studies and whenever measures of individual respondents are of interest. Challenges for Community Based Rural Tourism Continuity and Resilience in Disaster Prone Area: The Case of Mesilou, Sabah

When it comes to examining the uncertain world with a concern for sustainable development, it is obviously important to know if such actions, however marginal, might create positive and/or negative impacts in terms of meeting sustainability goals In the context of sustainable community based rural tourism (CBRT) programmes, these impacts could involve changes in the physical environment of rural areas and/or associated social and economic aspects of their inhabitants The decisions on planning and development of sustainable CBRT programmes made either by government or by local stakeholders are intended to overcome the current problems faced by rural communities In this light, putting plans or programmes into reality is important, to achieve the stated goal of positive implications, and more importantly, to ensure that the implementation of such programmes should not impose new problems or undesirable living conditions for rural communities Therefore, as one of management tools, indicators are needed to make rational policy choices on sustainable CBRT programmes and as one way of assessing the contribution of CBRT towards sustainable rural development This paper includes a review on the concept of sustainability indicators, beginning with explanations on the need for indicators and current practices in deriving sustainability indicators based on experiences from three South East Asian countries The review concludes with discussion of challenges in sustainability indicators work especially in dealing with the planning for an uncertain future
