TL;DR: In this article, a method and circuit for precisely synchronizing clocks in separate nodes on a communication network is provided by adjusting timestamps and related data in network messages, allowing a daisy-chain connection of the nodes and will forward time synchronization frames while accounting for delays in a manner that does not use boundary clocks, but does not depart from the IEEE 1588 standard protocol.
Abstract: A method and circuit for precisely synchronizing clocks in separate nodes on a communication network is provided by adjusting timestamps and related data in network messages. The circuit will allow a daisy-chain connection of the nodes and will forward time synchronization frames while accounting for delays in a manner that does not use boundary clocks, but does not depart from the IEEE 1588 standard protocol. The delays will be added on the fly to synchronization packets and the IP checksum and frame CRC will be adjusted. Deterministic data delivery and redundant data paths are also provided in a full duplex Ethernet network.

TL;DR: An operating system for distributed industrial controllers ensures the completion of enrolled application programs within a predetermined time span as is required for robust industrial control by preallocating dynamic and static hardware resources on a per application basis and in a manner that ensures execution of the application within the necessary time constraints.
Abstract: An operating system for distributed industrial controllers ensures the completion of enrolled application programs within a predetermined time span as is required for robust industrial control by preallocating dynamic and static hardware resources on a per application basis and in a manner that ensures execution of the application within the necessary time constraints. Portions of the distributed operating system may be distributed at particular hardware resources to provide necessary modeling for those hardware resources in making the commitments to resource bandwidths.

TL;DR: In this paper, an interrupt handler is provided for a real-time control system that prevents interrupts which occur asynchronously with respect to control tasks from upsetting guarantees of timely execution of the control tasks.
Abstract: An interrupt handler is provided for a real-time control system that prevents interrupts which occur asynchronously with respect to control tasks from upsetting guarantees of timely execution of the control tasks. For interrupts associated with the communication of messages between portions of a control task over the distributed system, the interrupts are converted to proxy tasks that may be scheduled like any task in a multitasked-operated system. More generally, interrupts may be assigned to a predetermined interrupt window being a portion of the total processing bandwidth of the processor. In pre-allocating the processor bandwidth to the control tasks, this interrupt window may be subtracted out thereby guaranteeing adequate bandwidth for both interrupt processing and user tasks.

TL;DR: Some key issues in developing agent-based manufacturing systems such as agent technology for enterprise integration and supply chain management, agent encapsulation, system architectures, dynamic system reconfiguration, learning, design and manufacturability assessments, distributed dynamic scheduling, integration of planning and scheduling are discussed.
Abstract: Agent technology has been considered as an important approach for developing distributed intelligent manufacturing systems. A number of researchers have attempted to apply agent technology to manufacturing enterprise integration, supply chain management, manufacturing planning, scheduling and control, materials handling, and holonic manufacturing systems. This paper gives a brief survey of some related projects in this area, and discusses some key issues in developing agent-based manufacturing systems such as agent technology for enterprise integration and supply chain management, agent encapsulation, system architectures, dynamic system reconfiguration, learning, design and manufacturability assessments, distributed dynamic scheduling, integration of planning and scheduling, concurrent scheduling and execution, factory control structures, potential tools and standards for developing agent-based manufacturing systems. An extensive annotated bibliography is provided.

TL;DR: The evolution of agent technologies and manufacturing will probably proceed hand in hand and the former can receive real challenges from the latter, which will have more and more benefits in applying agent technologies, presumably together with well-established or emerging approaches of other disciplines.
Abstract: The emerging paradigm of agent-based computation has revolutionized the building of intelligent and decentralized systems. The new technologies met well the requirements in all domains of manufacturing where problems of uncertainty and temporal dynamics, information sharing and distributed operation, or coordination and cooperation of autonomous entities had to be tackled. In the paper software agents and multi-agent systems are introduced and through a comprehensive survey, their potential manufacturing applications are outlined. Special emphasis is laid on methodological issues and deployed industrial systems. After discussing open issues and strategic research directions, we conclude that the evolution of agent technologies and manufacturing will probably proceed hand in hand. The former can receive real challenges from the latter, which, in turn, will have more and more benefits in applying agent technologies, presumably together with well-established or emerging approaches of other disciplines.
