TL;DR: In this paper, the disadvantages associated with magnetic gearboxes can be overcome by mechanically and magnetically integrating a magnetic gear and a permanent magnet brushless machine, to create a ldquopseudord-quo direct-drive machine.
Abstract: For low-speed electrical machine applications, it is usually weight/size and cost effective to employ a high-speed machine together with a mechanical gearbox. However, the disadvantages associated with magnetic gearboxes can be overcome by mechanically and magnetically integrating a magnetic gear and a permanent magnet brushless machine, to create a ldquopseudordquo direct-drive machine. It is shown that a torque density in excess of 60 kNm/m 3 can then be achieved, at a power factor in excess of 0.9.

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical subdomain model is presented to compute the magnetic field distribution in surface-mounted permanent magnet motors with semi-closed slots, which accurately accounts for armature reaction magnetic field and mutual influence between the slots.
Abstract: This paper presents an analytical subdomain model to compute the magnetic field distribution in surface-mounted permanent-magnet (PM) motors with semi-closed slots. The proposed model is sufficiently general to be used with any pole and slot combinations including fractional slot machines with distributed or concentrated windings. The model accurately accounts for armature reaction magnetic field and mutual influence between the slots. The analytical method is based on the resolution of two-dimensional Laplace's and Poisson's equations in polar coordinates (by the separation of variables technique) for each subdomain, i.e., magnet, air gap, slot-opening, and slots. Magnetic field distributions, back-EMF, and electromagnetic torque (including cogging torque) computed with the proposed analytical method are compared with those issued from finite-element analyses.

TL;DR: In this paper, an axial-field topology of magnetic gear was described for applications which require a hermetic isolation between the input and output shafts, such as pumps for use in the chemical/pharmaceutical, food, and aerospace industries.
Abstract: The paper describes an axial-field topology of magnetic gear, which is particularly suitable for applications which require a hermetic isolation between the input and output shafts, such as pumps for use in the chemical/pharmaceutical, food, and aerospace industries. It is shown that a torque density in excess of 70kNm∕m3 can be achieved, and that the axial forces, which are exerted on the high-speed and low-speed rotors, are relatively low.

TL;DR: In this paper, the possibility of replacing a mechanical planetary gear system by a magnetic planetary gearbox has been explored, which has many advantages such as contact-free, no gear lubrication, high speed reduction ratio and high durability.
Abstract: The paper deals with the possibility of replacing a mechanical planetary gear system by a magnetic planetary gearbox. The magnetic planetary gearbox has many advantages such as contact-free, no gear lubrication, high-speed-reduction ratio and high durability. Firstly, the principle of operation, design equations and Willis relation for the magnetic and the mechanical planetary gears are given. A comparative study between the two systems in terms of torque transmission capabilities is presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical method for magnetic field calculation in the air gap of cylindrical electrical machines including slotting effects is presented. But this method does not take into account the mutual influence of slots on the air-gap magnetic field.
Abstract: This paper deals with an analytical method for magnetic field calculation in the air gap of cylindrical electrical machines including slotting effects. The analytical method is based on the resolution of the two-dimensional Laplace's equation in polar coordinates by the separation of variables technique. The originality of the proposed model is to take into account the mutual influence of slots on the air-gap magnetic field. The proposed method is sufficiently general to be used as a tool for air-gap magnetic field calculation of slotted electrical machines as reluctance or permanent magnet motors or actuators. Magnetic field and electromagnetic torque computed with the proposed analytical method are validated through finite-element analysis.

TL;DR: The improvements and the new techniques proposed in the last decade are analyzed in depth and compared in order to highlight the qualities and defects of each.
Abstract: In this paper, the authors present an extended survey on the evolution and the modern approaches in the thermal analysis of electrical machines. The improvements and the new techniques proposed in the last decade are analyzed in depth and compared in order to highlight the qualities and defects of each. In particular, thermal analysis based on lumped-parameter thermal network, finite-element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics are considered in this paper. In addition, an overview of the problems linked to the thermal parameter determination and computation is proposed and discussed. Taking into account the aims of this paper, a detailed list of books and papers is reported in the references to help researchers interested in these topics.

TL;DR: In this paper, the trends in wind turbine generator systems are discussed and a review of current and possible future generator systems is presented. But the main focus of this paper is on the current state of the art.
Abstract: This paper reviews the trends in wind turbine generator systems. After discussing some important requirements and basic relations, it describes the currently used systems: the constant speed system with squirrel-cage induction generator, and the three variable speed systems with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), with gearbox and fully rated converter, and direct drive (DD). Then, possible future generator systems are reviewed. Hydraulic transmissions are significantly lighter than gearboxes and enable continuously variable transmission, but their efficiency is lower. A brushless DFIG is a medium speed generator without brushes and with improved low-voltage ride-through characteristics compared with the DFIG. Magnetic pseudo DDs are smaller and lighter than DD generators, but need a sufficiently low and stable magnet price to be successful. In addition, superconducting generators can be smaller and lighter than normal DD generators, but both cost and reliability need experimental demonstration. In power electronics, there is a trend toward reliable modular multilevel topologies.

TL;DR: The developed field modulation theory not only unifies the principle analysis of a large variety of electrical machines, including conventional dc machine, induction machine, and synchronous machine which are just special cases of the general field modulated machines, thus eliminating the problem of the machine theory fragmentation, but also provides a powerful guidance for inventing new machine topologies.
Abstract: This paper proposes a general field modulation theory for electrical machines by introducing magnetomotive force modulation operator to characterize the influence of short-circuited coil, variable reluctance, and flux guide on the primitive magnetizing magnetomotive force distribution established by field winding function multiplied by field current along the airgap peripheral. Magnetically anisotropic stator and rotor behave like modulators to produce a spectrum of field harmonics and the armature winding plays the role of a spatial filter to extract effective field harmonics to contribute the corresponding flux linkage and induce the electromotive force. The developed field modulation theory not only unifies the principle analysis of a large variety of electrical machines, including conventional dc machine, induction machine, and synchronous machine which are just special cases of the general field modulated machines, thus eliminating the problem of the machine theory fragmentation, but also provides a powerful guidance for inventing new machine topologies.

TL;DR: A variant of deep residual networks (DRNs) with dynamically weighted wavelet coefficients (DRN+DWWC) to improve diagnostic performance, which takes a series of sets of wavelet packet coefficients on various frequency bands as an input.
Abstract: One of the significant tasks in data-driven fault diagnosis methods is to configure a good feature set involving statistical parameters. However, statistical parameters are often incapable of representing the dynamic behavior of planetary gearboxes under variable operating conditions. Although the use of deep learning algorithms to find a good set of features for fault diagnosis has somewhat improved diagnostic performance, the lack of domain knowledge incorporated into deep learning algorithms has limited further improvement. Accordingly, this paper developed a variant of deep residual networks (DRNs), the so-called deep residual networks with dynamically weighted wavelet coefficients (DRN+DWWC) to improve diagnostic performance, which takes a series of sets of wavelet packet coefficients on various frequency bands as an input. Further, the fact that no general consensus has been reached as to which frequency band contains the most intrinsic information about a planetary gearbox's health status calls for “dynamic weighting layers” in the DRN+DWWC and the role of the layers is to dynamically adjust a weight applied to each set of wavelet packet coefficients to find a discriminative set of features that will be further used for planetary gearbox fault diagnosis.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dual-stator spoke array (DSSA) VPM topology was proposed to achieve high power factor and high torque capability, and the performance of the DSSA VPM was evaluated based on finite element analysis, including power factor, torque density and cogging torque.
Abstract: Vernier permanent-magnet (VPM) machines are well known for high torque density but low power factor. This paper deals with the low power factor of VPM machines. The goal is not obtained by reducing the electrical loading or adjusting current advance angle but by proposing a novel vernier topology, i.e., a dual-stator spoke-array (DSSA) VPM topology. In this paper, the characteristics of the DSSA VPM topology, such as active part, auxiliary mechanical structure, and rotor anisotropy, are analyzed in detail. Performances are evaluated based on finite-element analysis, including power factor, torque density, and cogging torque. The results show that the DSSA VPM topology exhibits high power factor, viz., ~0.9, and significantly high torque capability. The verification of the mechanical structure scheme is also done in this paper. Finally, theoretical analyses are validated by the experimental results by a 44-rotor pole 24-slot DSSA VPM prototype.
