Biological Control by Natural Enemies

The current knowledge of the geographic distribution of short-winged flower beetles and sap beetles (Kateretidae and Nitidulidae, respectively) from Iran is summarized. In total, 84 species of Nitidulidae (in 22 genera and 5 subfamilies: Epuraeinae, Carpophilinae, Cryptarchinae, Nitidulinae, Meligethinae) and 6 species of Kateretidae (in 4 genera: Brachyleptus Motschulsky, Brachypterolus Grouvelle, Brachypterus Kugelann, Kateretes Herbst) are listed. Brachyleptus discolor Reitter, Brachypterus glaber (Newman) (both Kateretidae), Epuraea distincta (Grimmer), Soronia oblonga (Brisout), Lamiogethes bidens (Brisout), Lamiogethes medvedevi (Kirejtshuk), Sagittogethes devillei (Grouvelle) and Xerogethes rotundicollis (Brisout) (Nitidulidae) are new records for Iran.

A checklist of the Kateretidae and Nitidulidae of Iran (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea)

A catalog of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera from Iran is provided based on literature reports and field collections. Representatives of 107 species and morphospecies of the infraorders Dipsocoromorpha, Enicocephalomorpha, Gerromorpha, Leptopodomorpha, and Nepomorpha are listed, and are distributed in 18 families including Aphelocheiridae (1 genus, 1 species), Belostomatidae (1 genus, 1 species), Corixidae (8 genera, 29 species), Dipsocoridae (1 genus, 2 species), Enicocephalidae (2 genera, 2 species), Gerridae (6 genera, 18 species), Hebridae (1 genus, 5 species), Helotrephidae (1 genus, 1 species), Hydrometridae (1 genus, 2 species), Leptopodidae (4 genera, 7 species), Mesoveliidae (1 genus, 2 species), Naucoridae (1 genus, 1 species), Nepidae (3 genera, 5 species), Notonectidae (2 genera, 8 species), Ochteridae (1 genus, 1 species), Pleidae (1 genus, 1 species), Saldidae (5 genera, 14 species), and Veliidae (2 genera, 7 species). Synonyms and geographical distribution of all the species are given, together with an identification key of families. According to the actual catalogs and studies eight species are doubtful for Iranian fauna.

The use of biological control is a fundamental tactic for pest suppression within an effective Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Biological control refers to the use of natural enemies against a pest population to reduce the pest's density and damage to a level lower than would occur in their absence. Biological control is designed with predators, parasitoids and pathogens. Some of these predaceous insects from many regions of Iran are studied in this paper. A total of 89 insect predator species from six orders viz. Coleoptera (31 species), Heteroptera (11 species), Diptera (10 species), Hymenoptera (15 species), Mantodea (16 species) and Odonata (6 species), were collected as biological control agents in agroecosystems of some regions of Iran.

A faunistic survey of the insect predators in some regions of Iran

Of the four staphylinid groups (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), the Staphylinine group is studied in this paper. A total of 56 species from 27 genera (including, Oxyporus Fabricius, Stenus Latreille, Astenus Stephens, Leptobium Casey, Achenium Leach, Lathrobium Gravenhorst, Micrillus Raffray, Tetartopeus Czwalina, Medon Stephens, Sunius Stephens, Paederus Fabricius, Scopaeus Erichson, Rugilus Leach, Procirrus Latreille, Othius Stephens, Gabrius Stephens, Neobisnus Ganglbauer, Philonthus Stephens, Remus Holme, Quedius Stephens, Creophilus Leach, Ocypus Leach, Staphylinus Linnaeus, Tasgius Stephens, Gyrohypnus Leach, Leptacinus Erichson, Xantholinus Dejean) and 4 subfamilies (i.e. Oxyporinae, Steninae, Paederinae, Staphylininae) are listed in this paper.

A contribution to the Staphylinine group of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea: Staphylinidae) from Iran

In this study, 19 species of 17 genera belonging to four subfamilies of the Omaliinae group (Dasycerinae, Omaliinae, Proteininae, Pselaphinae) are reported from Iranian rice and cotton fields and also from surrounding grasslands.
