Journal ArticleDOI
Towards frailty biomarkers: Candidates from genes and pathways regulated in aging and age-related diseases
Ana L. Cardoso,Adelaide Fernandes,Juan Antonio Aguilar-Pimentel,Martin Hrabé de Angelis,Joana R. Guedes,Maria Alexandra Brito,Saida Ortolano,Giovambattista Pani,Sophia Athanasopoulou,Efstathios S. Gonos,Markus Schosserer,Johannes Grillari,Pärt Peterson,Bilge Guvenc Tuna,Soner Dogan,Angelika Meyer,Ronald van Os,Anne-Ulrike Trendelenburg +17 more
TL;DR: Biomarker panels for frailty would be of high value and better than single markers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Beneficial effects of elderly tailored Mediterranean diet on the proteasomal proteolysis
Sophia Athanasopoulou,Niki Chondrogianni,Aurelia Santoro,Konstantina Asimaki,Vasiliki Delitsikou,Konstantinos Voutetakis,Cristina Fabbri,Barbara Pietruszka,Joanna Kaluza,Claudio Franceschi,Efstathios S. Gonos +10 more
TL;DR: It was demonstrated that subgroups of non-frail subjects and women receive a greater benefit after the intervention, concerning specifically the proteasome content and activity, which highlights the putative beneficial effects of Mediterranean diet on the major cellular proteolytic mechanism, the proteAsome, in elderly people.
Journal ArticleDOI
Significant improvement of stress and aging biomarkers using a novel stress management program with the cognitive restructuring method "Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention" in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and healthy adults.
Sophia Athanasopoulou,Dimitrios S. Simos,Maria Charalampopoulou,Nikolaos Tentolouris,Alexandros Kokkinos,Flora Bacopoulou,Elena Aggelopoulou,Eleni Zigkiri,George P. Chrousos,George P. Chrousos,Christina Darviri,Efstathios S. Gonos +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Pythagorean self awareness intervention (PSAI) was used to improve leucocyte telomere length (LTL) and proteasome levels in healthy volunteers and adults with type 2 diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Royal Jelly Components Encapsulation in a Controlled Release System—Skin Functionality, and Biochemical Activity for Skin Applications
Eleni Spanidi,Sophia Athanasopoulou,Angeliki Liakopoulou,A. Chaidou,Sophia Hatziantoniou,Konstantinos Gardikis +5 more
TL;DR: In the present study, a new encapsulation and delivery system consisting of liposomes and cyclodextrins incorporating royal jelly has been developed, which aims to the elimination of the stability disadvantages of royal jelly’s sensitive component 10-HDA, but also to the controlled release of its ingredients for an enhanced bioactivity in cosmeceutical applications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antioxidant and Antiaging Properties of a Novel Synergistic Nutraceutical Complex: Readouts from an In Cellulo Study and an In Vivo Prospective, Randomized Trial
Sophia Athanasopoulou,Marianna Kapetanou,Michel Georges Magouritsas,Nikoletta Mougkolia,Polykseni Taouxidou,Michael Papacharalambous,Fotios Sakellaridis,Efstathios S. Gonos +7 more
TL;DR: The results support the notion that interventions with specifically designed combinations of natural compounds targeting multiple hallmarks of aging represent an effective way to improve healthspan and well-being.
