Journal ArticleDOI
Biofilms: an emergent form of bacterial life.
Hans-Curt Flemming,Jost Wingender,Ulrich Szewzyk,Peter D. Steinberg,Scott A. Rice,Staffan Kjelleberg +5 more
TL;DR: The fundamental role of the biofilm matrix is considered, describing how the characteristic features of biofilms — such as social cooperation, resource capture and enhanced survival of exposure to antimicrobials — all rely on the structural and functional properties of the matrix.
Journal ArticleDOI
Animals in a bacterial world, a new imperative for the life sciences
Margaret J. McFall-Ngai,Michael G. Hadfield,Thomas C. G. Bosch,Hannah V. Carey,Tomislav Domazet-Lošo,Angela E. Douglas,Nicole Dubilier,Gérard Eberl,Tadashi Fukami,Scott F. Gilbert,Ute Hentschel,Nicole King,Staffan Kjelleberg,Andrew H. Knoll,Natacha Kremer,Sarkis K. Mazmanian,Jessica L. Metcalf,Kenneth H. Nealson,Naomi E. Pierce,John F. Rawls,Ann H. Reid,Edward G. Ruby,Mary E. Rumpho,Jon G. Sanders,Diethard Tautz,Jennifer J. Wernegreen +25 more
TL;DR: Recent technological and intellectual advances that have changed thinking about five questions about how have bacteria facilitated the origin and evolution of animals; how do animals and bacteria affect each other’s genomes; how does normal animal development depend on bacterial partners; and how is homeostasis maintained between animals and their symbionts are highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Attenuation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence by quorum sensing inhibitors
Morten Hentzer,Hong Wu,Jens Bo Andersen,Kathrin Riedel,Thomas Bovbjerg Rasmussen,Niels Bagge,Naresh Kumar,Mark A. Schembri,Zhijun Song,Peter Kristoffersen,Mike Manefield,J. W. Costerton,Søren Molin,Leo Eberl,Peter D. Steinberg,Staffan Kjelleberg,Niels Høiby,Michael Givskov +17 more
TL;DR: A synthetic derivate of natural furanone compounds can act as a potent antagonist of bacterial quorum sensing and inhibited virulence factor expression in a mouse pulmonary infection model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of quorum sensing in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm bacteria by a halogenated furanone compound.
Morten Hentzer,Kathrin Riedel,Thomas Bovbjerg Rasmussen,Arne Heydorn,Jens Bo Andersen,Matthew R. Parsek,Scott A. Rice,Leo Eberl,Søren Molin,Niels Høiby,Staffan Kjelleberg,Michael Givskov +11 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the furanone compound specifically represses expression of a PlasB-gfp reporter fusion without affecting growth or protein synthesis, indicating a general effect on target genes of the las quorum sensing circuit.
Journal ArticleDOI
A characterization of DNA release in Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures and biofilms
Marie Allesen-Holm,Kim Bundvig Barken,Liang Yang,Mikkel Klausen,Jeremy S. Webb,Staffan Kjelleberg,Søren Molin,Michael Givskov,Tim Tolker-Nielsen +8 more
TL;DR: Experiments with P. aeruginosa strains indicated that the extracellular DNA is generated via a mechanism which is dependent on acyl homoserine lactone and Pseudomonas quinolone signalling, as well as on flagella and type IV pili.
