Journal ArticleDOI
A field guide to pandemic, epidemic and sporadic clones of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
Stefan Monecke,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Anna C. Shore,David C. Coleman,Patrick Eberechi Akpaka,Michael Borg,Henry Chow,Margaret Ip,Lutz Jatzwauk,Daniel Jonas,Kristina Kadlec,Angela M. Kearns,Frédéric Laurent,Frances G. O'Brien,Julie C. Pearson,Antje Ruppelt,Stefan Schwarz,E. Scicluna,Peter Slickers,Hui-Leen Tan,Stefan Weber,Ralf Ehricht +21 more
TL;DR: A high level of biodiversity among MRSA, especially among strains harbouring SCCmec IV and V elements is shown, and the data indicate a high rate of genetic recombination in MRSA involving SCC elements, bacteriophages or other mobile genetic elements and large-scale chromosomal replacements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evolution and Global Transmission of a Multidrug-Resistant, Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Lineage from the Indian Subcontinent
Eike J. Steinig,Sebastián Duchêne,D. Ashley Robinson,Stefan Monecke,Stefan Monecke,Maho Yokoyama,Maisem Laabei,Peter Slickers,Patiyan Andersson,Deborah A Williamson,Angela Kearns,Richard V. Goering,Elizabeth Dickson,Ralf Ehricht,Ralf Ehricht,Margaret Ip,Matthew V. N. O'Sullivan,Geoffrey W. Coombs,Andreas Petersen,Gráinne I. Brennan,Anna C. Shore,David C. Coleman,Annalisa Pantosti,Hermínia de Lencastre,Henrik Westh,Nobumichi Kobayashi,Helen Heffernan,Birgit Strommenger,Franziska Layer,Stefan Weber,Hege Vangstein Aamot,Leila Skakni,Sharon J. Peacock,Derek S. Sarovich,Simon R. Harris,Julian Parkhill,Ruth C. Massey,M. T. G. Holden,M. T. G. Holden,Stephen D. Bentley,Steven Y. C. Tong +40 more
TL;DR: The Bengal Bay clone emerged from a virulent progenitor circulating on the Indian subcontinent and subsequently global transmission was associated with travel or family contact in the region, demonstrating the importance of whole-genome sequencing for tracking the evolution of emerging and resistant pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diversity of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus CC22-MRSA-IV from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.
Abiola Senok,Ali M. Somily,Adeola Raji,Darius Gawlik,Darius Gawlik,Fatimah S. Al-Shahrani,Shehla Baqi,Samar S. Boswihi,Leila Skakni,Edet E. Udo,Stefan Weber,Ralf Ehricht,Stefan Monecke +12 more
TL;DR: CC22-MRSA-IV from KSA could be linked to other epidemic strains from the Middle East and possibly India, rather than to the Western European UK-EMRSA-15/Barnim EMRSA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genotyping of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus from the United Arab Emirates
Abiola Senok,Rania Nassar,Rania Nassar,Handan Celiloglu,Handan Celiloglu,Anju Nabi,Mubarak Alfaresi,Stefan Weber,Irfan Rizvi,Elke Müller,Annett Reissig,Darius Gawlik,Stefan Monecke,Stefan Monecke,Ralf Ehricht,Ralf Ehricht +15 more
TL;DR: An extensive MRSA repertoire including CCs previously unreported in the region and novel strains which probably arose locally suggest an evolving MRSA landscape.
Journal ArticleDOI
Management of infants born to mothers with SARS-CoV2 infection: a prospective observational study
Chokkiyil Ponnambath Hafis Ibrahim,Fatma Oleks Lobko,Ghalia Abou Alchamat,Waleed Gamal Swilam,Saleema Rasool Wani,Soha Tohamy Said,Stefan Weber,Paul Bosio +7 more
TL;DR: The risk of mother-to-infant transmission of SARS-CoV2, vertically or horizontally, in the perinatal period is very low and breast feeding and rooming in can be practised safely with adequate infection control precautions with negligible clinical risk to the infant.
