Journal ArticleDOI
Duodenal levodopa infusion monotherapy vs oral polypharmacy in advanced Parkinson disease.
Dag Nyholm,A. I.M. Nilsson Remahl,Nil Dizdar,Radu Constantinescu,Björn Holmberg,Rasmus Jansson,Sten-Magnus Aquilonius,Håkan Askmark +7 more
TL;DR: Continuous intraduodenal infusion of the levodopa/carbidopa enteral gel as monotherapy is safe and clinically superior to a number of individually optimized combinations of conventional oral and subcutaneous medications in patients with motor fluctuations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mapping human brain monoamine oxidase A and B with 11C-labeled suicide inactivators and PET.
Joanna S. Fowler,Robert R. MacGregor,Alfred P. Wolf,Carroll D. Arnett,Stephen L. Dewey,David J. Schlyer,David R. Christman,Jean Logan,Maynard E. Smith,H. Sachs,Sten-Magnus Aquilonius,Peter Bjurling,Christer Halldin,Per Hartvig,Klaus L. Leenders,Hans Lundqvist,Lars Oreland,C.-G. Stålnacke,Bengt Långström +18 more
TL;DR: Suicide enzyme inactivators labeled with positron emitters can be used to quantitate the distribution and kinetic characteristics of MAO in human brain structures and show rapid clearance of the inactive enantiomer and retention of the active enantiomers within MAO B-rich brain structures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biochemical changes in dementia disorders of Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT).
Carl-Gerhard Gottfries,Rolf Adolfsson,Sten-Magnus Aquilonius,Avid Carlsson,Sven-Åke Eckernäs,Agneta Nordberg,Lars Oreland,Lars Svennerholm,Å. Wiberg,Bengt Winblad +9 more
TL;DR: In postmortem investigations of patients with dementia of Alzheimer type (AD/SDAT) the brain weight was significantly reduced when compared to controls and the activity of monoamine oxidase B was increased suggesting a proliferation of extra neuronal tissue in the AD/ SDAT-brains.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimizing levodopa pharmacokinetics: intestinal infusion versus oral sustained-release tablets.
Dag Nyholm,Håkan Askmark,Cecilia Gomes-Trolin,Tina W. Knutson,Hans Lennernäs,Christer Nyström,Sten-Magnus Aquilonius +6 more
TL;DR: Continuous intraduodenal delivery of a new carbidopa/levodopa formulation offers a means for markedly improved control of motor fluctuations in late stages of PD.
Journal Article
Biogenic amines in human brain in normal aging, senile dementia, and chronic alcoholism.
Arvid Carlsson,Rolf Adolfsson,Sten-Magnus Aquilonius,C. G. Gottfries,Lars Oreland,Lars Svennerholm,Winblad B +6 more
TL;DR: Postmortem examination of various brain regions of cases without known brain pathology showed an age-related decrease in the levels of dopamine in the nigrostriatal system, of norepinephrine in the hippocampus, and of 5-HT in the gyrus cinguli but an increase in the medulla oblongata and of MAO B in several brain regions.
