Many routes to turbulent convection

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used laser-Doppler methods to identify four distinct sequences of instabilities leading to turbulent convection at low Prandtl number (2·5−5·0), in fluid layers of small horizontal extent.

US Cosmic Visions: New Ideas in Dark Matter 2017: Community Report

Yonit Hochberg, +241 more
TL;DR: The white paper summarizes the workshop "U.S. Cosmic Visions: New Ideas in Dark Matter" held at University of Maryland on March 23-25, 2017.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sustained Kilowatt Lasing in a Free-Electron Laser with Same-Cell Energy Recovery

TL;DR: The Jefferson Laboratory's kW-level infrared free-electron laser utilizes a superconducting accelerator that recovers about 75% of the electron-beam power, and in achieving first lasing, the accelerator operated "straight ahead" to deliver 38-MeV, 1.1-mA cw current for lasing near 5 mA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spectrum of chi (3)(-3 omega; omega, omega, omega ) in polyacetylene: An application of free-electron laser in nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

TL;DR: The full spectrum of the third-order optical susceptibiltiy, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(3)}$(\ensureMath{\omega}), in polyacetylene is measured using an infrared free-electron laser to imply states of opposite symmetry lie near the 1D band gap at ${E}_{g}$\ensurmath{\sim}1.8 eV.
