Abstract: Green's functions for a laminated composite plate have been studied using the representation in terms of guided modes. Attention has been focused here on the two-dimensional (plane strain) motion. For this purpose, the exact dispersion equation for the laminated plate has been solved using Muller's method, and initial estimates obtained through a stiffness-based Rayleigh-Ritz type approximate technique. The well-known numerical difficulties associated with computation of eigenvalues and eigenmodes at high frequencies are circumvented by adopting the delta matrix technique. Numerical results for an isotropic plate are compared with those obtained from the evaluation of the wave-number integrals. Results are presented also for a 35-layer cross-ply composite plate.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review some of their recent studies on the effective elastic constants of composites where the occluded phase is spherical or spheroidal (oblate or prolate).
Abstract: The authors review some of their recent studies on the effective elastic constants of composites where the occluded phase is spherical or spheroidal (oblate or prolate). From constituent properties and phase geometry, they estimated the composites` effective macroscopic elastic constants using two models: the Ledbetter-Datta scattered-plane-wave ensemble-average model and the Mori-Tanaka effective-field model. The authors measured elastic constants by three principal methods: resonance, pulse-echo, and acoustic-resonance spectroscopy. They show microstructures, measurements, and model calculations for five representative composites: SiC{sub p}/Al, Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-mullite{sub p}/Al, Al{sub 2}O{sub 3p}/mullite, graphite{sub p}/ferrite (cast iron), voids/Ti.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of an interphase region between a fiber and the surrounding matrix in a composite cylinder has been investigated, where the elastic moduli of the interphase material are radially inhomogeneous.
