Different types of renewable resources are need of the hour as fossil fuels are on The verge of extinction but electricity demand is increasing exponentially. In reality renewable energy is available in such a huge amount that it can provide 3078 times the present global energy need. Wind energy is one of these sources and having potential to generate 200 times energy than require globally. It is the oldest source of energy on the earth and from 1887 only it started to use for electricity generation. The efficiency of wind turbine, gear and generator decides the overall efficiency among this wind turbine is having scope of improvement. The wind turbine will generate maximum power if wind variation is less but it is not in someone's hand. Thus an MPPT technique comes into picture and maximizes power output. Various MPPT techniques are present till date, but in this paper we proposed perturb and observe, Incremental Conductance and Fuzzy logic control algorithms along with mechanical MPPT i.e. pitch control. These MPPT algorithms track the maximum power for varying wind conditions. Pitch control comes handy when speed increases more than rated speed, it will change pitch angle in such a way that it will rotate and constant speed to generate maximum power.

A Review on Various MPPT Techniques for Wind Energy Conversion System

This paper aims to increase the effectiveness of the Maximum Power Control (MPC) strategy by using a new Adaptive Maximum Power Control method (AMPC) for maximizing the power delivered by the Wind Turbine System (WTS) during partial load operation whatever the disturbances caused by variations in wind profile. The AMPC is applied to one of the frequently used Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) methods called as Optimum Torque (OT) MPPT algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed AMPC strategy aims to optimize the wind energy captured by the WTS during partial load operation under rating wind speed, using Fuzzy-Logic as Adaption Mechanisms (AMPCFLC). Additionally, the performances of the proposed improved OT-MPPT method based on AMPC-FLC are compared to the OT-MPPT method based on Conventional Maximum Power Control (CMPC-PI) under the same conditions. The robustness, dynamic performance, and fast approximation of the optimal value are proved with the numerical simulations under MATLAB/Simulink® software.

Adaptive Maximum Power Control Based on Optimum Torque Method for Wind Turbine by Using Fuzzy-Logic Adaption Mechanisms during Partial Load Operation

The paper proposes an effective nonlinear integral backstepping approach strategy (IBS) through the use of a new adaptive power control algorithm for variable-speed wind turbine generators (VS-WTGs) to optimize the power extracted from the WTGs. The suggested approach is applied to one of the most frequently used maximum power control methods called as tip speed ratio (TSR) during partial-load operation considering the effects of the variations in wind velocity profile and unmodeled system dynamics such as external disturbances. The proposed method of control is known to scale-back the mechanical stress at the level of the GT shafts (generator and turbine). Furthermore, the IBS approach is relatively simple, which significantly reduces the online computational time and cost. Some numerical simulation results prove, under different wind speed models, that the proposed AC-TSR-IBS method works well on the level of the improved efficiency and the rapid system response compared to conventional TSR-PI method.

Modeling and analysis of pitch angle control on variable speed wind turbines

Wind energy gains increasing importance around the world. The efficiency and the energy conversion system are improved due to the advancement of variable speed drive design and control of wind energy systems. For the wind turbine systems, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) plays an essential role in achieving efficient conversion of energy. The MPPT strategy controls the rotor speed by adjusting electromagnetic torque and maximizing the generator's output power. This paper evaluates applying the ProportionalIntegral (PI) Controller and the interested Model Predictive Controller (MPC) on two different control strategies to fulfill MPPT of variable speed wind turbines using the Direct Speed Measurement method and Pitch Angle Control technique. The Matlab Simulink is applied for optimizing and implementing these two control methods. The results are investigated to compare the performance of the controllers employed with the wind turbine under different operating conditions. The obtained results show that our controller (MPC) presents better performance with the direct speed measurement and the pitch angle control system.
