Determinants of woody cover in African savannas
Mahesh Sankaran,Niall P. Hanan,Robert J. Scholes,Jayashree Ratnam,David J. Augustine,Brian S. Cade,Jacques Gignoux,Steven I. Higgins,Xavier Le Roux,Fulco Ludwig,Jonas Ardö,Feetham Banyikwa,Andries Bronn,Gabriela Bucini,Kelly K. Caylor,Michael B. Coughenour,Alioune Diouf,Wellington N. Ekaya,Christie J. Feral,Edmund C. February,Peter G. H. Frost,Pierre Hiernaux,Halszka Hrabar,Kristine L. Metzger,Herbert H. T. Prins,Susan Ringrose,William B. Sea,Jörg Tews,Jeff Worden,Nick Zambatis +29 more
TL;DR: It is shown, using data from 854 sites across Africa, that maximum woody cover in savannas receiving a mean annual precipitation (MAP) of less than ∼650 mm is constrained by, and increases linearly with, MAP.
Journal ArticleDOI
More woody plants? The status of bush encroachment in Botswana's grazing areas.
TL;DR: This paper suggests that specific management strategies should be adopted to help overcome the bush encroachment problem, which is causing a significant reduction in the extent of Botswana's high quality rangeland.
Journal ArticleDOI
Species diversity of the Okavango Delta, Botswana
Lars Ramberg,Peter Hancock,Markus Lindholm,Thoralf Meyer,Susan Ringrose,Jan Sliva,Jo G. Van As,Cornelis Vander Post +7 more
TL;DR: In the Okavango Delta (about 28,000 km2) the number of identified species is 1,300 for plants, 71 for fish, 33 for amphibians, 64 for reptiles, 444 for birds, and 122 for mammals as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Estimating rainfall and water balance over the Okavango River Basin for hydrological applications
Julie Wilk,Dominic Kniveton,Lotta Andersson,R Layberry,Martin C. Todd,Denis A. Hughes,Susan Ringrose,Cornelis Vanderpost +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a historical database for use in rainfall-runoff modeling of the Okavango River Basin in Southwest Africa is presented, where the sensitivity of the rainfall fields to spatial interpolation techniques and the density of gauges were evaluated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biogeochemistry of Kalahari sands
TL;DR: A review of previous studies on the Kalahari soils combined with new results from recent analyses of physical (mostly hydraulic) and biogeochemical properties of the soil can be found in this article.
