TL;DR: This paper takes a postmodernist stance and explores the idea of the 'normal' before going on to analyse normal childbirth, referring to concepts of the normal and the natural, and adds to the current discussion by recalling psychoanalytical theory and philosophical analysis.
Abstract: In the face of increasing intervention in childbirth, 'normal birth' is currently being promoted by the World Health Organization, national governments, professional bodies and other organisations throughout the world. This paper takes a postmodernist stance and explores the idea of the 'normal' before going on to analyse normal childbirth, referring to concepts of the normal and the natural. It refers to historical developments in childbearing and lay organisations along with research relating to women's views of childbirth, to question the appropriateness of using 'normal' to describe the very individual experiences of childbirth. It laments the way in which women have been treated and arguably continue to be 'cared for' in maternity/obstetric services. It adds to the current discussion by recalling psychoanalytical theory and philosophical analysis to conclude with a call for future consideration of the 'good-enough' birth instead of concentrating on promoting normal birth which is very difficult, if not impossible to define in retrospect, or to prospectively promote.

TL;DR: With the impending withdrawal of statutory supervision of midwifery in the UK, this paper explores the wider issue of clinical supervision and group supervision; part 2 will present the findings from several sets of data exploring the value of group supervision in midw ifery in Wales.
Abstract: Statutory supervision has been a feature of midwifery practice in the UK since 1902. As part of statutory supervision, all midwives meet with their named Supervisor of Midwives (SoM) to review their practice over the previous year and to confirm their competence to practise in the coming year. A new Future Proofing Model of Supervision in Wales was launched in August 2014 (Ness and Richards, 2014), and the annual one-to-one supervisory meetings were replaced with group supervision meetings, based on an action learning approach (Machin and Pearson, 2014). With the impending withdrawal of statutory supervision of midwifery in the UK, this paper explores the wider issue of clinical supervision and group supervision; part 2 (to follow in a future issue) will present the findings from several sets of data exploring the value of group supervision in midwifery in Wales.

TL;DR: The Welsh Association of Midwifery Lecturers aim to develop a framework of 'composite skills' descriptors to teach and assess practical midw ifery skills was developed specifically to enhance the learning opportunities for students, while proving useful in everyday practice.
Abstract: This paper describes the work of the Welsh Association of Midwifery Lecturers in their aim to develop a framework of 'composite skills' descriptors to teach and assess practical midwifery skills. Following the UKCC Fitness for Practice report (1999) the All Wales Initiative was set up and the Association was formed from this. Their first aim was to devise a framework tool that would combine theory with practice, as part of the Fitness for Practice aim of midwifery competence. It was developed specifically to enhance the learning opportunities for students, while proving useful in everyday practice. Potentially, the tool will be applicable to the development of the grading of practice for degree programmes.
