Tactical Locomotive Fleet Sizing for Freight Train Operations
TL;DR: In this article, a simulation-based approach is proposed for tactical locomotive fleet sizing in a railroad system in which a priori freight train schedule does not exist, and the study shows that the throughput increases with the number of locomotives upto a certain level; after that the congestion caused by the movements of large number of freight trains in the capacity-constrained rail network offsets the potential benefit of a large fleet.
Journal ArticleDOI
Freight train routing and scheduling in a passenger rail network: computational complexity and the stepwise dispatching heuristic
TL;DR: This paper considers a situation where passenger trains must adhere to a strict published schedule, whereas freight train movements can be inserted at any convenient time, without disrupting scheduled passenger trains, and develops a Stepwise Dispatching Heuristic for routing and scheduling multiple freight trains in a passenger rail network.
Journal ArticleDOI
Locomotive assignment and freight train scheduling using genetic algorithms
TL;DR: This study considers the movement of freight trains through a passenger rail network, a common occurrence in many developing countries, and proposes a genetic algorithm to find non-dominant locomotive assignment solutions and a method for evaluating its performance.
Journal ArticleDOI
A heuristic for routing and scheduling freight trains in a passenger rail network
TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchical permutation heuristic is proposed to identify the route and schedule for freight trains one at a time in a passenger rail network, where a number of dispatching rules are proposed for identifying the best hierarchy in which trains must be scheduled.
