TL;DR: A single phase grid interactive voltage source converter with the proposed energy management scheme, performs the main function of real power transfer along with ancillary services like current harmonics mitigation, reactive power support and power factor improvement at the point of common coupling (PCC).
Abstract: In this paper, a unified energy management scheme is proposed for grid interactive hybrid energy storage system (GIHESS). The intermittent nature of renewable energy resources coupled with the unpredictable changes in the loads, demand the high power and also high energy density storage systems to coexist in todays microgrid environment. A single phase grid interactive voltage source converter (GIVSC) with the proposed energy management scheme, performs the main function of real power transfer along with ancillary services like current harmonics mitigation, reactive power support and power factor improvement at the point of common coupling (PCC). Active participation of supercapacitor/battery control to handle sudden/average changes in power surges results in fast DC link voltage regulation, effective energy management and reduced current stress on battery.

TL;DR: A unified energy management scheme is proposed for renewable grid integrated systems with battery-supercapacitor hybrid storage that enables the real power transfer along with ancillary services such as current harmonic mitigation, reactive power support, and power factor improvement at the point of common coupling.
Abstract: In this paper, a unified energy management scheme is proposed for renewable grid integrated systems with battery–supercapacitor hybrid storage. The intermittent nature of renewable-energy resources (RES), coupled with the unpredictable changes in the load, demands high-power and high-energy-density storage systems to coexist in today's microgrid environment. The proposed scheme dynamically changes the modes of renewable integrated systems based on the availability of RES power and changes in load as well. The participation of battery–supercapacitor storage to handle sudden/average changes in power surges results in fast dc link voltage regulation, effective energy management, and reduced current stress on battery. In addition, the proposed energy management scheme enables the real power transfer along with ancillary services such as current harmonic mitigation, reactive power support, and power factor improvement at the point of common coupling. The proposed scheme is validated through both simulation and experimental studies.

TL;DR: This paper aims at providing a comprehensive view of BESSs integration in distribution grids, highlighting the main focus, challenges, and research gaps for each one of these aspects.
Abstract: Recent developments in the electricity sector encourage a high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). In addition, European policies are pushing for mass deployment of Electric Vehicles (EVs). Due to their non-controllable characteristics, these loads have brought new challenges in distribution networks, resulting in increased difficulty for Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to guarantee a safe and reliable operation of the grid. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are promising solutions for mitigating the impact of the new loads and RES. In this paper, different aspects of the BESS's integration in distribution grids are reviewed. At first, the physical layer will be considered, focusing on the main battery technologies commercially available and on the power electronics converter. Secondly, the different functionalities that a grid-connected BESS can provide will be investigated, and then its sizing, location and control in distribution network will be discussed. In addition, an overview of actual BESSs installations is given. All in all, this paper aims at providing a comprehensive view of BESSs integration in distribution grids, highlighting the main focus, challenges, and research gaps for each one of these aspects.

TL;DR: In this paper, a unified energy management system (EMS) for a grid interactive hybrid microgrid with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is proposed, which achieves a continuous and reliable power supply to local loads and exports/imports power to/from grid.
Abstract: This paper proposes a unified energy management system (EMS) for a grid interactive hybrid microgrid with a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). The proposed EMS achieves a continuous and reliable power supply to local loads and exports/imports power to/from grid. The proposed EMS considers the PV power variations, grid availability, electricity pricing and variations in local loads. A single phase voltage source converter (VSC) transfers real power between DC grid and utility grid and provides ancillary services such as reactive power support, unity power factor and harmonic mitigation at point of common coupling (PCC). The EMS also addresses extreme operating conditions like load shedding, off-MPP operation of PV, critical oscillation of HESS powers, islanded operation and resynchronization with grid. The efficacy of proposed EMS is verified by time-domain simulation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new ecological energy system focusing on renewable energy based on electric energy, which is characterized by multiple energy sources, coordination of supply and demand, centralization and decentralization, and extensive public participation.
Abstract: Internet of Energy (IOE) is a new ecological energy system focusing on renewable energy, based on electric energy. It is characterized by multiple energy sources, coordination of supply and demand, centralization and decentralization, and extensive public participation. It is particularly worth mentioning that it is combined with energy storage, which represents the trend of intelligent development and rational utilization of urban energy in the future. Supercapacitors have become a research hotspot due to their excellent performance in power systems. In this paper, by introducing the energy storage principle of supercapacitors, we summarized the existing five supercapacitor models, and analyzed the characteristics and applicability of each model. At the same time, by summarizing and analyzing the energy storage principle of supercapacitors and related models, we focus on their role in the development of IOE, and also forecast the development prospect of IOE. Based on the deep integration of the Internet concept and advanced information technology with the energy industry, we aim to achieve green, coordinated and efficient development to drive economic growth and support the energy revolution, through multi-energy collaborative energy network, information and physics integrated energy system and innovative energy operation mode.

TL;DR: The MG operational performance, stability, basic control issues, concept of MGs are presented and are a promising option for future power system interfaces.
Abstract: In association with increasing in penetration of distributed generation sources (DGs) into power systems, and their power management of different DGs and the grid has elevated as a major concern. Though, Microgrid (MG) is the extensively an accepted concept for the association of DGs in power system networks. Integrating renewable energy sources (RESs), which are often connected via power electronic interfaces into the power grid, can sometimes be a stimulating task just from a purely technical point of view. Thus, the MG is a promising option for future power system interfaces. Evolving the challenges has taken place in terms of the power system control, power quality improvement, reliability, and energy management. The MG operational performance, stability, basic control issues and, concept of MGs are presented in this paper.
