The feeding ecology of three piscivorous fish species (perch (Perca fluviatilis), pike (Esox lucius) and burbot (Lota lota)), was studied in the subarctic Pasvik watercourse (69 ° N), northern Norway and Russia. All three species primarily occupied the benthic habitats in the watercourse. Perch and burbot exhibited distinct ontogenetic niche shifts in food resource use, perch changing from a dominance of zooplankton to zoobenthos to fish, and burbot from zoobenthos to fish. Fish prey dominated the diet of all the investigated size-classes of pike, but small-sized pike (<20 cm) were not represented in the sample. Fish prey size was positively related to predator size in all three species. Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) was the dominant prey of pike and large-sized burbot and perch. Nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) was also an important prey and appeared to be a dietary stepping-stone enhancing the transition from invertebrate feeding to consumption of large-sized whitefish prey for all three predators. A cluster analysis separated the different size groups of the three predator species into five functional feeding groups, most of them containing two or all three species. Within these feeding groups, and especially among the piscivorous size-classes, there was a strong and significant interspecific overlap in prey selection, and the dietary similarities between the species were in general much larger than the intraspecific similarities between ontogenetic stages. All three piscivorous species are important top predators in the aquatic food web of the watercourse, and their ontogenetic diet shifts and resource partitioning patterns generate a substantial food web complexity in this subarctic ecosystem.

Ontogenetic niche shifts and resource partitioning in a subarctic piscivore fish guild

To simulate swimming in a trawl, age 3 year brown trout Salmo trutta (L.) were made to swim against a flow of 0.5 m s -1 for 60 min. To simulate cold shock, similar to placing them in a chilling tank, the fish were kept for 10 min in a tank containing ice and water. To simulate the combined stressors, the fish were first made to swim followed by a cold shock. The fish were in a comatose state 10 min after cold shock and combined stressors but conscious after swimming only. All the fish survived until the end of the studied recovery period (maximum 24 h). Cold shock after swimming (combined stressors v. swimming only) did not produce higher blood cortisol, lactate or glucose concentrations 10 min after the treatment. The effect of cold shock, however, was evident in the delayed start of recovery in cortisol and glucose concentrations. All the stress indicators used decreased to the levels for undisturbed fish within 24 h, except in the case of glucose after the combined stressors.

Effects of abrupt cold shock on stress responses and recovery in brown trout exhausted by swimming

– A total of 40 (20 age-3 + 20 age-4) radio-tagged hatchery-reared brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and 40 wild radio-tagged northern pike (Esox lucius L.) were released into a regulated river. Age-3 brown trout were predicted and observed to be highly vulnerable to predation by pike (50% mortality), whereas age-4 brown trout were predicted and observed to enjoy an almost absolute size refuge from predation (5% mortality). Almost half of the fish from both age groups similarly emigrated and survived from the river within 3 days of the release. However, there was a considerable difference in survival between age groups for fish that remained in the river for a longer period. Of these, all except one age-3 brown trout were eaten by pike, whereas all but one age-4 fish survived predation.

Effect of brown trout body size on post-stocking survival and pike predation

Fish and fisheries in large regulated peaking‐power river reservoirs in northern Finland, with special reference to the efficiency of brown trout and rainbow trout stocking

The seasonal diet of a predator, brown trout Salmo trutta [total length (L T ) 17-69 cm] and simultaneous density and size-structure of prey populations, vendace Coregonus albula and smelt Osmerus eperlanus (4-16 cm L T ), in a large boreal lake were analysed and compared in 2001 and 2002. The upper L T limit for consumed prey was c. 40% of the predator LT. All brown trout, however, preferred small ( 10 cm L T ) prey. The results also suggested that equal densities of similar-sized (4-10 cm L T ) fish of the two prey species led to random foraging on these species by brown trout, but if either one of the prey species predominated (>50%) in the lake, brown trout shifted to foraging on this species almost exclusively. Brown trout diets thus reflected the density dynamics of the two alternative prey species.

Diet of brown trout in relation to variation in abundance and size of pelagic fish prey

Lake-to-lake variation in brown trout, Salmo trutta m. lacustris L., yield from stocking was examined in 34 lakes in northern Finland. The trout were mainly stocked as 2–3-year-old fish. Catch statistics were compiled with information on water quality, water level fluctuations, fishing effort and lake geomorphology. Absolute brown trout yields (kgha-1) increased with increasing stocking rate, but there was an indication of non-linearity at higher stocking densities. Relative yields (kg per thousand trout released) were highest at low stocking rates. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to determine the best predictive model for lake-to-lake variability in brown trout yields. Seventeen measured regressands were used initially, and then replaced with scores obtained in a principal component analysis of highly correlated water quality variables and species-specific fish yields. Three major determinants of brown trout yields in these lakes were found in both analyses: fish community, stocking rate and fishing effort. Brown trout yields from stocking were higher in lakes with proportionally high yields of vendace or vendace and whitefish and proportionally low yields of pike.
