TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis of the Patience (After Sebald) by Grant Gee, which follows in the footsteps of W.G. Sebald and his walking tour of Suffolk, England, as described in his book The Rings of Saturn.
Abstract: Cinematic cartography can be an especially powerful tool for deep mapping, as it can convey the narratives, emotions, memories and histories, as well as the locations and geography that are associated with a place. This is evident in the documentary film Patience (After Sebald) by Grant Gee, which follows in the footsteps of W.G. Sebald and his walking tour of Suffolk, England, as described in his book The Rings of Saturn. A variety of strategies in cinematic cartography are used quite consciously in Gee’s exploration of space, place and story. Using Teresa Castro’s three cartographic shapes of cinema, I structure an analysis of the film’s opening scene through a discussion of cinematic cartography, or the plotting of geospatial data onto a map, as well as what I will differentiate as cartographic cinema, or the mapping of space through the cinematographic image. I argue that both are necessary not only to have a deep understanding of the world and our place in it, but also in how to transmit that knowledge to others.

TL;DR: For qualitative visualizations, space is defined in common text layouts such as prose paragraphs as discussed by the authors , and fitting text within these layouts is a function for emerging NLP capabilities such as summarization.
Abstract: A BSTRACT Qualitative data can be conveyed with strings of text. Fitting longer text into visualizations requires a) space to place the text inside the visualization; and b) appropriate text to fit the space available. For quantitative visualizations, space is available in area marks; or within visualization layouts where the marks have an implied space (e.g. bar charts). For qualitative visualizations, space is defined in common text layouts such as prose paragraphs. To fit text within these layouts is a function for emerging NLP capabilities such as summarization.

TL;DR: In this article , the authors consider the use of cartographies that permeate and enable the practice of film production, using the feature film PUNCH (2022) as a case study, and discuss ways in which mud maps, overhead maps and relational maps were used as communicative devices in establishing a shared template for understanding the positioning of fictional spaces.
Abstract: This practitioner piece considers cartographies that permeate and enable the practice of film production. Using his feature film PUNCH (2022) as a case study, Welby Ings discusses ways in which mud maps, overhead maps and relational maps were used as communicative devices in establishing a shared template for understanding the positioning of fictional spaces. Mud maps (see Danesh’s ‘7 pro tips for managing crew parking when filming on location’, 2019), are conventionally used in film production to describe geographies and inform cast and crew about locations. Overhead maps (see Isham’s ‘Creating overhead maps for film directors’, 2017), were employed in association with shot lists, as ‘graphic prompts’ when directing complex scenes. Relational or ‘mental maps’ (see Bays’, ‘Between the scenes: Choosing locations’, 2015) were used in conjunction with site drawings, to establish spatial blueprints for discussing the internal logic of the film’s world with the director of photography, production designers, location scouts, sound recordists, costumers and postproduction collaborators. As the film’s director and cartographer, the author created these maps with a unique visual language that included distinctive considerations of marginalia, typography, line weight, texture, historical allusion and colour, to communicate the emotional tone of the film’s world.
