TL;DR: It is shown that CA04 is sensitive to approved and experimental antiviral drugs, suggesting that these compounds could function as a first line of defence against the recently declared S-OIV pandemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Avian flu: isolation of drug-resistant H5N1 virus.
Q. Mai Le,Maki Kiso,Kazuhiko Someya,Yuko T. Sakai,T. Hien Nguyen,Khan H. L. Nguyen,N. Dinh Pham,Ha H. Ngyen,Shinya Yamada,Yukiko Muramoto,Taisuke Horimoto,Ayato Takada,Hideo Goto,Takashi Suzuki,Yasuo Suzuki,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +15 more
TL;DR: The isolation of an H5N1 virus from a Vietnamese girl that is resistant to the drug oseltamivir, which is an inhibitor of the viral enzyme neuraminidase and is currently used for protection against and treatment of influenza is reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influenza: lessons from past pandemics, warnings from current incidents
TL;DR: A review of molecular factors that contribute to the emergence of pandemic strains in poultry and in humans and the eradication of pathogenic avian influenza viruses is reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Haemagglutinin mutations responsible for the binding of H5N1 influenza A viruses to human-type receptors
Shinya Yamada,Yasuo Suzuki,Takashi Suzuki,Mai Q. Le,Chairul A. Nidom,Yuko Sakai-Tagawa,Yukiko Muramoto,Mutsumi Ito,Maki Kiso,Taisuke Horimoto,Kyoko Shinya,Toshihiko Sawada,Makoto Kiso,Taiichi Usui,Takeomi Murata,Yipu Lin,Alan Hay,Lesley F. Haire,D.J. Stevens,Rupert J. Russell,Rupert J. Russell,Steven J. Gamblin,John J. Skehel,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +23 more
TL;DR: It is shown that some H5N1 viruses isolated from humans can bind to both human and avian receptors, in contrast to those isolated from chickens and ducks, which recognize the avian receptor exclusively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pandemic Threat Posed by Avian Influenza A Viruses
TL;DR: The identification of avian viruses in humans underscores the potential of these and similar strains to produce devastating influenza outbreaks in major population centers.
