Abstract: We propose a new rendering technique that produces 3-D images with enhanced visual comprehensibility. Shape features can be readily understood if certain geometric properties are enhanced. To achieve this, we develop drawing algorithms for discontinuities, edges, contour lines, and curved hatching. All of them are realized with 2-D image processing operations instead of line tracking processes, so that they can be efficiently combined with conventional surface rendering algorithms.Data about the geometric properties of the surfaces are preserved as Geometric Buffers (G-buffers). Each G-buffer contains one geometric property such as the depth or the normal vector of each pixel. By using G-buffers as intermediate results, artificial enhancement processes are separated from geometric processes (projection and hidden surface removal) and physical processes (shading and texture mapping), and performed as postprocesses. This permits a user to rapidly examine various combinations of enhancement techniques without excessive recomputation, and easily obtain the most comprehensible image.Our method can be widely applied for various purposes. Several of these, edge enhancement, line drawing illustrations, topographical maps, medical imaging, and surface analysis, are presented in this paper.

Abstract: Purpose: Colorectal carcinogenesis is thought to be related to abdominal obesity and insulin resistance. To investigate whether visceral fat accumulation contributes to colorectal carcinogenesis, we examined its accumulation and the levels of the adipose tissue–derived hormone adiponectin in Japanese patients with colorectal adenoma. Experimental Design: Fifty-one consecutive Japanese patients ages ≥40 years and with colorectal adenoma were subjected to measurement of visceral fat area by computed tomography scanning and plasma adiponectin concentration. The patients also underwent the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. Insulin resistance was calculated by the homeostasis metabolic assessment (HOMA-IR) method. The controls were 52 Japanese subjects ages ≥40 years and without colorectal polyp. Cigarette smokers and subjects who consumed alcohol (≥30 g ethanol/d) were excluded. Results: The patients with colorectal adenoma showed significantly more visceral fat area and significantly less plasma adiponectin concentration in comparison with the controls [odds ratio (OR), 2.19; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.47-3.28; P < 0.001 and OR, 0.24; 95% CI, 0.14-0.41; P < 0.001, respectively] by logistic regression analysis. HOMA-IR index was also associated with colorectal adenoma (OR 2.60; 95% CI, 1.20-5.64; P = 0.040). Visceral fat area and adiponectin were associated with adenoma number (1, 2, ≥ 3), the size of the largest adenoma (<10 and ≥10 mm), and adenoma histology (tubular and tubulovillous/villous). Conclusions: These results suggest an association of visceral fat accumulation and decreased plasma adiponectin concentration with colorectal adenoma in Japanese patients. This study may offer a new insight to understanding the relationship of colorectal carcinogenesis with abdominal obesity and insulin resistance.

Abstract: A new pseudo coloring technique for large scale one-dimensional datasets is proposed. For visualization of a large scale dataset, user interaction is indispensable for selecting focus areas in the dataset. However, excessive switching of the visualized image makes it difficult for the user to recognize overview/ detail and detail/ detail relationships. The goal of this research is to develop techniques for visualizing details as precisely as possible in overview display. In this paper, visualization of a one-dimensional but very large dataset is considered. The proposed method is based on pseudo coloring, however, each scalar value corresponds to two discrete colors. By painting with two colors at each value, users can read out the value precisely. This method has many advantages: it requires little image space for visualization; both the overview and details of the dataset are visible in one image without distortion; and implementation is very simple. Several application examples, such as meteorological observation data and train convenience evaluation data, show the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract: The G-buffer method is applied to NC machining. A total NC system is created that consists of all essential functions, such as tool path generation, path verification, and feed rate control. Moreover, any combination of object surface and tool shape is acceptable. By utilizing G-buffers created from a parallel projection, the required NC functions are realized as image processing operations. This ensures that the NC software is independent from surface description. Conventional rendering software can be used to make the G-buffers. Any surface can be milled if it can be rendered by parallel projection. Tool shape changes can be easily handled by changing the image processing filters. 3D examples of geometric surfaces, mesh data, and volume data are milled with this method, and the results show that the method is very effective.

Abstract: This paper presents a new reflectance model for rendering computer synthesized images. The model accounts for the relative brightness of different materials and light sources in the same scene. It describes the directional distribution of the reflected light and a color shift that occurs as the reflectance changes with incidence angle. The paper presents a method for obtaining the spectral energy distribution of the light reflected from an object made of a specific real material and discusses a procedure for accurately reproducing the color associated with the spectral energy distribution. The model is applied to the simulation of a metal and a plastic.
