This paper presents a new operational strategy for a small scale wind farm which is composed of both fixed and variable speed wind turbine generator systems (WTGS). Fixed speed wind generators suffer greatly from meeting the requirements of new wind farm grid code, because they are largely dependent on reactive power. Integration of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices is a solution to overcome that problem, though it definitely increases the overall cost. Therefore, in this paper, we focuses on a new wind farm topology, where series or parallel connected fixed speed WTGSs are installed with variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) driven permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). VSWT-PMSG uses a fully controlled frequency converter for grid interfacing and it has abilities to control its reactive power as well as to provide maximum power to the grid. Suitable control strategy is developed in this paper for the multilevel frequency converter of VSWT-PMSG. A real grid code defined in the power system is considered to analyze the low voltage ride through (LVRT) characteristic of both fixed and variable speed WTGSs. Moreover, dynamic performance of the system is also evaluated using real wind speed data. Simulation results clearly show that the proposed topology can be a cost effective solution to augment the LVRT requirement as well as to minimize voltage fluctuation of both fixed and variable speed WTGSs.

A Variable Speed Wind Turbine Control Strategy to Meet Wind Farm Grid Code Requirements

This paper presents the modal analysis of a grid-connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The change in modal properties for different system parameters, operating points, and grid strengths are computed and observed. The results offer a better understanding of the DFIG intrinsic dynamics, which can also be useful for control design and model justification.

Wind Power: Modelling and Impact on Power System Dynamics

A huge number of wind generators are going to be connected with the existing network in the near future. Therefore it is necessary to analyse the transient stability of power systems, including wind turbine generator systems (WTGS). It has already been reported that one-mass or lumped model of wind turbine system is insufficient to analyse the transient behaviour of WTGS. It has also been reported that for the precise transient analysis of WTGS, a six-mass drive train model is needed. The reduced order models (three-mass and two-mass) have also been adopted so far for transient behaviour analysis. But the transient stability analysis of using six-mass, three-mass and two-mass drive train models has not been reported sufficiently so far in the literature. The authors have conducted an analysis using these methods. First, a detailed transformation procedure is presented from six-mass drive train model to two-mass model, which can be used in the analysis of transient stability simulation with sufficient accuracy. It is then determined which drive train model is appropriate for transient stability analysis of grid-connected WTGS. The effects of drive train parameters (such as inertia constant, spring constant and damping constant) on stability are examined using the above mentioned types of drive train models. Moreover, different types of symmetrical and asymmetrical faults at different wind generator power levels are considered in the simulation analyses with and without considering damping constants in six-mass, three-mass and two-mass shaft models. Considering the simulation results, it can be concluded that two-mass shaft model is sufficient for the transient stability analysis of WTGS.

Comparative study on transient stability analysis of wind turbine generator system using different drive train models

The performance of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) during grid faults is attracting much interest due to the proliferation of wind turbines that employ this technology. International grid codes specify that the generator must exhibit a fault-ride-through (FRT) capability by remaining connected and contributing to network stability during a fault. Many DFIG systems employ a rotor circuit crowbar to protect the rotor converter during a fault. Although this works well to protect the generator, it does not provide favorable grid support behavior. This paper describes an experimental investigation of an alternative FRT approach using a brake chopper circuit across the converter dc link to ensure that the dc-link voltage remains under control during a fault. Two different approaches to chopper control are examined and the resulting FRT performance is compared with that of a conventional crowbar approach. The new chopper-based control methods are experimentally evaluated using a 7.5-kW DFIG test rig facility.

Evaluation of the Performance of a DC-Link Brake Chopper as a DFIG Low-Voltage Fault-Ride-Through Device

Generation of electricity using wind power has received considerable attention worldwide in recent years. In order to investigate the impacts of the integration of wind farm into utilities' network various windmill models have been developed. One such impact is related to the critical clearing time (CCT) of the wind power based embedded generators (WPBEG). The work in this paper has shown that oversimplification of the modeling of windmill mechanical drive train could introduce significant error in the value of the CCT that defines the stability limit of an integrated wind farm. This paper also reports investigation into the factors that influence the dynamic behavior of the WPBEGs following network fault conditions. It is shown that wind farm CCT can be affected by various factors contributed by the host network. Results obtained from several case studies are presented and discussed. This investigation is conducted on a simulated grid-connected wind farm using EMTP.
