This paper explores the recent research developments in high-heat-flux thermal management. Cooling schemes such as pool boiling, detachable heat sinks, channel flow boiling, microchannel and mini-channel heat sinks, jet-impingement, and sprays, are discussed and compared relative to heat dissipation potential, reliability, and packaging concerns. It is demonstrated that, while different cooling options can be tailored to the specific needs of individual applications, system considerations always play a paramount role in determining the most suitable cooling scheme. It is also shown that extensive fundamental electronic cooling knowledge has been amassed over the past two decades. Yet there is now a growing need for hardware innovations rather than perturbations to those fundamental studies. An example of these innovations is the cooling of military avionics, where research findings from the electronic cooling literature have made possible the development of a new generation of cooling hardware which promise order of magnitude increases in heat dissipation compared to today's cutting edge avionics cooling schemes.

In the Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) approach, air is compressed to high pressure, stored, and expanded to output work when needed. The temperature of air tends to rise during compression, and the rise in the air internal energy is wasted during the later storage period as the compressed air cools back to ambient temperature.The present study focuses on designing an interrupted-plate heat exchanger used in a liquid-piston compression chamber for CAES. The exchanger features layers of thin plates stacked in an interrupted pattern. Twenty-seven exchangers featuring different combinations of shape parameters are analyzed. The exchangers are modeled as porous media. As such, for each exchanger shape, a Representative Elementary Volume (REV), which represents a unit cell of the exchanger, is developed. The flow through the REV is simulated with periodic velocity and thermal boundary conditions, using the commercial CFD software ANSYS FLUENT. Simulations of the REVs for the various exchangers characterize the various shape parameter effects on values of pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient between solid surfaces and fluid. For an experimental validation of the numerical solution, two different exchanger models made by rapid prototyping, are tested for pressure drop and heat transfer. Good agreement is found between numerical and experimental results. Nusselt number vs. Reynolds number relations are developed on the basis of pore size and on hydraulic diameter.To analyze performance of exchangers with different shapes, a simplified zero-dimensional thermodynamic model for the compression chamber with the inserted heat exchange elements is developed. This model, valuable for system optimization and control simulations, is a set of ordinary differential equations. They are solved numerically for each exchanger insert shape to determine the geometries of best compression efficiency.Copyright © 2013 by ASME

Design of an interrupted-plate heat exchanger used in a liquid-piston compression chamber for compressed air energy storage

The relationship between free-stream turbulence and boundary layer behavior has been investigated using spectral measurements. The power spectral densities of turbulence quantities in transitional and fully turbulent boundary layers were computed and compared to the power spectra of the same quantities measured in the free stream. Comparisons were made using the transfer function. The transfer function is the ratio of two spectra at each frequency in the spectra. Comparisons were done in flows with low (0.6 percent) and high (8 percent) free-stream turbulence intensities. Evidence was gathered that suggests that relatively low-frequency, large-scale eddies in the free stream buffet the boundary layer, causing boundary layer unsteadiness at the same low frequencies. These fluctuations are present in both transitional and fully turbulent boundary layers. They are seen under both high and low free-stream turbulence conditions, although they are stronger in the high-turbulence case. Examination of the turbulent shear stress suggests that the low-frequency fluctuations enhance transport in the boundary layer but they are not so effective in promoting eddy transport as are turbulent eddies produced and residing within the boundary layer. In the fully-turbulent boundary layer, higher-frequency fluctuations are added to the low-frequency unsteadiness. These higher-frequency fluctuations, not seen in the transitional boundary layer, are associated with turbulence production in the boundary layer and appear not to be directly related to free-stream unsteadiness.
