This paper explores the recent research developments in high-heat-flux thermal management. Cooling schemes such as pool boiling, detachable heat sinks, channel flow boiling, microchannel and mini-channel heat sinks, jet-impingement, and sprays, are discussed and compared relative to heat dissipation potential, reliability, and packaging concerns. It is demonstrated that, while different cooling options can be tailored to the specific needs of individual applications, system considerations always play a paramount role in determining the most suitable cooling scheme. It is also shown that extensive fundamental electronic cooling knowledge has been amassed over the past two decades. Yet there is now a growing need for hardware innovations rather than perturbations to those fundamental studies. An example of these innovations is the cooling of military avionics, where research findings from the electronic cooling literature have made possible the development of a new generation of cooling hardware which promise order of magnitude increases in heat dissipation compared to today's cutting edge avionics cooling schemes.

Oscillatory Flow Regenerative Heat Exchangers for Application to Energy Storage Systems

A synthetic jet is an intermittent jet which issues through an orifice from a closed cavity over half of an oscillation cycle. Over the other half, the flow is drawn back through the same orifice into the cavity as a sink flow. The flow is driven by an oscillating diaphragm, which is one wall of the cavity. Synthetic jets are widely used for heat transfer enhancement since they are effective in disturbing and thinning thermal boundary layers on surfaces being cooled. They do so by creating an intermittently-impinging flow and by carrying to the hot surface turbulence generated by breakdown of the shear layer at the jet edge. The present study documents experimentally and computationally heat transfer performance of an array of synthetic jets used in a heat sink designed for cooling of electronics. This heat sink is comprised of a series of longitudinal fins which constitute walls of parallel channels. In the present design, the synthetic jet flow impinges on the tips of the fins. In the experiment, one channel of a 20-channel heat sink is tested. A second flow, perpendicular to the jet flow, passes through the channel, drawn by a vacuum system. Surface- and time-averaged heat transfer coefficients for the channel are measured, first with just the channel flow active then with the synthetic jets added. The purpose is to assess heat transfer enhancement realized by the synthetic jets. The multiple synthetic jets are driven by a single diaphragm which, in turn, is activated by a piezoelectrically-driven mechanism. The operating frequency of the jets is 1250 Hz with a cycle-maximum jet velocity of 50 m/s, as measured with a miniature hot-film anemometer probe. In the computational portion of the present paper, diaphragm movement is driven by a piston, simulating the experimental conditions. The flow is computed with a dynamic mesh using the commercial software package ANSYS FLUENT. Computed heat transfer coefficients show a good match with experimental values giving a maximum difference of less than 10%. The effects of amplitude and frequency of the diaphragm motion are documented. Changes in heat transfer due to interactions between the synthetic jet flow and the channel flow are documented in cases of differing channel flow velocities as well as differing jet operating conditions. Heat transfer enhancement obtained by activating the synthetic jets can be as large as 300% when the channel flow is of a low velocity compared to the synthetic jet peak velocity (as low as 4 m/s in the present study).Copyright © 2012 by ASME

Secondary holes to a main film cooling hole are used to improve film cooling performance by creating anti-kidney vortices. The effects of injection angle of the secondary holes on both film cooling effectiveness and surrounding thermal and flow fields are investigated in this numerical study. Two kinds of primary hole shapes are adopted. One is a cylindrical hole, the other is a horn-shaped hole which is designed from a cylindrical hole by expanding the hole in the transverse direction to double the hole size at the exit. Two smaller cylindrical holes, the secondary holes, are located symmetrically about the centerline and downstream of the primary hole. Three compound injection angles (α = 30°, 45° and 60°, β = 30°) of the secondary holes are analyzed while the injection angle of the primary hole is kept at 45°. Cases with various blowing ratios are computed. It is shown from the simulation that cooling effectiveness of secondary holes with a horn-shaped primary hole is better than that with a cylindrical primary hole, especially at high blowing ratios. With a cylindrical primary hole, increasing inclination angle of the secondary holes provides better cooling effectiveness because the anti-kidney vortices created by shallow secondary holes cannot counteract the kidney vortex pairs adequately, enhancing mixing of main flow and coolant. For secondary holes with a horn-shaped primary hole, large secondary hole inclination angles provide better cooling performance at low blowing ratios; but, at high blowing ratios, secondary holes with small inclination angles are more effective, as the film coverage becomes wider in the downstream area.Copyright © 2017 by ASME

Injection Angle Influence of Secondary Holes on the Enhancement of Film Cooling Effectiveness With Horn-Shaped or Cylindrical Primary Holes

The regenerator is a key component to Stirling cycle machine efficiency. Typical regenerators are of sintered fine wires or layers of fine-wire screens. Such porous materials are contained within solid-waH casings. Thermal energy exchange between the regenerator and the casing is important to cycle performance for the matrix and casing would not have the same axial temperature profile in an actual machine. Exchange from one to the other may allow shunting of thermal energy, reducing cycle efficiency. In this paper, temperature profiles within the near-wall region of the matrix are measured and thermal energy transport, termed thermal dispersion, is inferred. The data show how the wall affects thermal transport. Transport normal to the mean flow direction is by conduction within the solid and fluid and by advective transport within the matrix. In the near-wall region, both may be interrupted from their normal in-core pattern. Solid conduction paths are broken and scales of advective transport are damped. An equation is presented which describes this change for a wire screen mesh. The near-wall layer typically acts as an insulating layer. This should be considered in design or analysis. Effective thermal conductivity within the core is uniform. In-core transverse thermal effective conductivity values are compared to direct and indirect measurements reported elsewhere and to 3D numerical simulation results, computed previously and reported elsewhere. The 3-D CFD model is composed of six cylinders in cross flow, staggered in arrangement to match the dimensions and porosity of the matrix used in the experiments. The commercial code FLUENT is used to obtain the flow and thermal fields. The thermal dispersion and effective thermal conductivities for the matrix are computed from the results.
