The rhizosphere encompasses the millimeters of soil surrounding a plant root where complex biological and ecological processes occur. This review describes recent advances in elucidating the role of root exudates in interactions between plant roots and other plants, microbes, and nematodes present in the rhizosphere. Evidence indicating that root exudates may take part in the signaling events that initiate the execution of these interactions is also presented. Various positive and negative plant-plant and plant-microbe interactions are highlighted and described from the molecular to the ecosystem scale. Furthermore, methodologies to address these interactions under laboratory conditions are presented.

Summary
Phosphorus (P) is limiting for crop yield on > 30% of the world's arable land and, by some estimates, world resources of inexpensive P may be depleted by 2050. Improvement of P acquisition and use by plants is critical for economic, humanitarian and environmental reasons. Plants have evolved a diverse array of strategies to obtain adequate P under limiting conditions, including modifications to root architecture, carbon metabolism and membrane structure, exudation of low molecular weight organic acids, protons and enzymes, and enhanced expression of the numerous genes involved in low-P adaptation. These adaptations may be less pronounced in mycorrhizal-associated plants. The formation of cluster roots under P-stress by the nonmycorrhizal species white lupin (Lupinus albus), and the accompanying biochemical changes exemplify many of the plant adaptations that enhance P acquisition and use. Physiological, biochemical, and molecular studies of white lupin and other species response to P-deficiency have identified targets that may be useful for plant improvement. Genomic approaches involving identification of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) found under low-P stress may also yield target sites for plant improvement. Interdisciplinary studies uniting plant breeding, biochemistry, soil science, and genetics under the large umbrella of genomics are prerequisite for rapid progress in improving nutrient acquisition and use in plants.

Potato tuber-inducing activities of jasmonic acid and related compounds

The Al accumulation mechanisms in an Al accumulator plant, Melastoma malabathricum L. (Melastoma), was investigated. Al was located in the upper epidermal cells and also distributed in mesophyll cells in leaf sections. In root sections, Al was found in all the root tissues, particularly in the epidermis and endodermis. Al concentrations in young leaves, mature leaves, old leaves, and roots were 8.0, 9.2, 14.4, and 10.1 mg g1, respectively. Approximately 45% of total Al in oldest leaves, and approximately 60% of total Al in leaves of other positions and roots were extracted in Tris-HCl buffer (pH 7.0). Since Al in the residual parts was mostly dissolved in hot 0.5 M H2SO4 containing 2% cetyl trimethylammonium bromide, residual Al seemed to consist mainly of monomeric Al and Al bound to pectic substances and hemicellulose. Al in the Tris-HCl extract consisted of non-monomeric Al (complexed form). Oxalate concentration in the Tris-HCl extract in leaves was significantly higher in the +Al treatment than in the –Al treatment and there was a positive correlation between the Al concentration and oxalate concentration. 27Al NMR spectrum of fresh leaves indicated the presence in the order of monomeric Al, Al-oxalate, Al-(oxalate)2, and Al-(oxalate)3 in intact leaves.

Isolation of a Specific Potato Tuber-Inducing Substance from Potato Leaves

To clarify the processes involved in plant immunity, we have isolated and characterized a single recessive Arabidopsis mutant, cad1 (constitutively activated cell death 1), which shows a phenotype that mimics the lesions seen in the hypersensitive response (HR). This mutant shows spontaneously activated expression of pathogenesis-related (PR) genes, and leading to a 32-fold increase in salicylic acid (SA). Inoculation of cad1 mutant plants with Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000 shows that the cad1 mutation results in the restriction of bacterial growth. Cloning of CAD1 reveals that this gene encodes a protein containing a domain with significant homology to the MACPF (membrane attack complex and perforin) domain of complement components and perforin proteins that are involved in innate immunity in animals. Furthermore, cell death is suppressed in transgenic cad1 plants expressing nahG, which encodes an SA-degrading enzyme. We therefore conclude that the CAD1 protein negatively controls the SA-mediated pathway of programmed cell death in plant immunity.
