Written texts and the rise of literate culture in ancient Greece

Is it fair to judge early Greek rhetoric by the standards of Plato and Aristotle? This text argues that it is not, and yet this is the path taken by current scholarship on the subject. Arguing against this view, this work sees early Greek rhetoric as largely unsystematic efforts to explore, more by means than by precept, all aspects of discourse. Replacing these early text by such treatises as the "Rhetoric" of Aristotle, Cole explains, can only be understood as part of a gradual process, as artistic prose came to be disseminated in written texts and so available in a form that, for the first time, be analyzed, evaluated and closely imitated.

As a collection of passages this book will certainly prove useful, at the very least as an ample reminder of the extent to which early Christians and Socratic moralists inhabited the same stylistic and conceptual world. Whether it is sufficient to establish the more specific thesis of a debt to Cynicism is more questionable. In the first place, the notion of Cynicism with which D. works seems too wide. Too little effort is made to differentiate the varying Cynic credentials of the sources, and to separate the securely Cynic from elements common to the whole Socratic heritage in moral preaching. Secondly, the closeness of the parallels adduced is by no means uniform. While entries like number 21 (Judge Not, Condemn Not: Lk. 6.37-8; D.L. 6.27-8, Diog. Ep. 50, etc.) are fine and revealing, others (like 41, No Greetings: Lk. 10.4; Dio 33.13, Lucian, Vit. Aucl. 10) point only to the vaguest of similarities, and others again are downright pointless (e.g. 15, Hunger and Repletion: Lk. 6.21 and 25; Heracl. Ep. 7.2-3, Seneca 17.9, etc.). Within individual entries too the passages cited are often something of a jumble. The net has been cast too wide and the catch insufficiently sorted. Thirdly, the possibility of extensive direct contact between Cynics and Galilean Jews in the first century remains hypothesis rather than verifiable fact; too little is known of numbers and diffusion to give the argument the basis it needs.
