Abstract: In a common meeting environment with projector-and-screen settings, the discussion may be dominated by a presenter who has the control of the content displayed. Although frequently used for architectural discussions, this digitally-engaged setting may not be optimal in its support of participation and discussion of design ideas. This paper presents a novel use of laser pointers to enhance the interaction in architectural presentations. A laser pointing system designed for a projector-and-screen environment was developed. To compare the performance of the laser pointer with other interaction devices, a controlled user study was carried out to test the efficiency of different devices in point-and-selection interactions. The usability of the system was also tested in a design critique. These two tests show that laser pointer is useful and able to encourage participation in group discussions. Details of the laser pointing system, the experiments and the results are reported in this paper.

Abstract: This study offers an insight to architectural students' problem framing activities using digital and paper media. The role of problem framing in design processes and its contribution to design learning has been studied by others. Here, we investigate the effects of media on framing activities. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate problem framing under three settings, namely online co-located, online remote and paper-based co-located. Student pairs were asked to spend forty minutes in solving collaboratively a wicked design problem. The results show that problem framing activities are significantly different in the online remote setting compared to those in the two co-located settings. We find more density of framing activities happened in the online remote setting than in the other two settings while there is no significant difference between online co-located and paper-based co- located settings.

Abstract: Within a general context of economic reform that began in the late 1970s , China set out to establish architectural practice in a professional context in 1980 and established a professional framework in 1995. Practice , however, has moved at a different pace in evolving professional attitudes and behaviors. This paper traces the profession of architecture through to the situation in the early 21st century and examines different modes of practice observable in some major cities in China. Six case studies are presented to illustrate different current modes of practice. The paper discusses professional dynamics illustrated by these case studies using the Superpositioning Matrix as a model; demands on architectural education are then considered in light of these discussions. The conclusion identifies issues to be addressed in coming years.

Abstract: Additive manufacturing (AM) alias 3D printing translates computer-aided design (CAD) virtual 3D models into physical objects. By digital slicing of CAD, 3D scan, or tomography data, AM builds objects layer by layer without the need for molds or machining. AM enables decentralized fabrication of customized objects on demand by exploiting digital information storage and retrieval via the Internet. The ongoing transition from rapid prototyping to rapid manufacturing prompts new challenges for mechanical engineers and materials scientists alike. Because polymers are by far the most utilized class of materials for AM, this Review focuses on polymer processing and the development of polymers and advanced polymer systems specifically for AM. Abstract: Additive manufacturing processes take the information from a computer-aided design (CAD) file that is later converted to a stereolithography (STL) file. In this process, the drawing made in the CAD software is approximated by triangles and sliced containing the information of each layer that is going to be printed. There is a discussion of the relevant additive manufacturing processes and their applications. The aerospace industry employs them because of the possibility of manufacturing lighter structures to reduce weight. Additive manufacturing is transforming the practice of medicine and making work easier for architects. In 2004, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers did a classification of the various technologies and there are at least four additional significant technologies in 2012. Studies are reviewed which were about the strength of products made in additive manufacturing processes. However, there is still a lot of work and research to be accomplished before additive manufacturing technologies become standard in the manufacturing industry because not every commonly used manufacturing material can be handled. The accuracy needs improvement to eliminate the necessity of a finishing process. The continuous and increasing growth experienced since the early days and the successful results up to the present time allow for optimism that additive manufacturing has a significant place in the future of manufacturing.
