TL;DR: In this paper, the preparation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposites with graphene oxide (GO) using a simple water solution processing method is reported, and efficient load transfer is found between the nanofiller graphene and matrix PVA and the mechanical properties of the graphene-based nanocompositionite with molecule-level dispersion are significantly improved.
Abstract: Despite great recent progress with carbon nanotubes and other nanoscale fillers, the development of strong, durable, and cost-efficient multifunctional nanocomposite materials has yet to be achieved. The challenges are to achieve molecule-level dispersion and maximum interfacial interaction between the nanofiller and the matrix at low loading. Here, the preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites with graphene oxide (GO) using a simple water solution processing method is reported. Efficient load transfer is found between the nanofiller graphene and matrix PVA and the mechanical properties of the graphene-based nanocomposite with molecule-level dispersion are significantly improved. A 76% increase in tensile strength and a 62% improvement of Young's modulus are achieved by addition of only 0.7 wt% of GO. The experimentally determined Young's modulus is in excellent agreement with theoretical simulation.

TL;DR: In this paper , a quinoline-based thioketal-containing zinc (II) coordinative module (Zn•QS) is designed to transform common low-molecular-weight (LMW) polyethyleneimine (PEI) into a high-performance siRNA carrier with self-fluorescence and reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsiveness.
Abstract: A novel quinoline‐based thioketal‐containing zinc (II) coordinative module (Zn‐QS) is designed to transform common low‐molecular‐weight (LMW) polyethyleneimine (PEI) into a high‐performance siRNA carrier (Zn‐PQ) with self‐fluorescence and reactive oxygen species (ROS)‐responsiveness. In the multifunctional module, a quinoline derivative, frequently serving as pharmacophore, is utilized as the highly biocompatible ligand, and the Zn (II) coordinative quinoline‐based ligand also provides the robust self‐fluorescence character. And the ROS‐responsive thioketal spacer is introduced to trigger the siRNA controlled release into cytoplasm. Consequently, by the synergistic effects between Zn‐QS and LMW PEI on improving several crucial transfection‐efficiency‐related steps, the representative Zn‐PQ4 exhibits very high transfection efficiency of 1.8 and 2.5‐folds commercial Lipo2k and PEI25k in stem cell rADSC, respectively, >90% of transfection rates in a variety of conventional cell lines (3T3, HK‐2, HepG2, 293T, HeLa, PANC‐1), and 98.4% and 99.9% EGFP knockdown rates in 293T and HepG2 cells, respectively. Furthermore, Zn‐PQ4/siRNA polyplexes can circumvent various obstacles existing in systemic application to accumulate in heart, liver, and kidney and greatly silence the DNA expression in vivo. This work demonstrates the promising application prospects of the resulting efficient siRNA carriers in siRNA‐mediated gene therapy and fluorescence‐guided research.

TL;DR: A critical review of the synthesis methods for graphene and its derivatives as well as their properties and the advantages of graphene-based composites in applications such as the Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalysis, and Raman enhancement are described.
Abstract: Graphene has attracted tremendous research interest in recent years, owing to its exceptional properties. The scaled-up and reliable production of graphene derivatives, such as graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), offers a wide range of possibilities to synthesize graphene-based functional materials for various applications. This critical review presents and discusses the current development of graphene-based composites. After introduction of the synthesis methods for graphene and its derivatives as well as their properties, we focus on the description of various methods to synthesize graphene-based composites, especially those with functional polymers and inorganic nanostructures. Particular emphasis is placed on strategies for the optimization of composite properties. Lastly, the advantages of graphene-based composites in applications such as the Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells, photovoltaic devices, photocatalysis, as well as Raman enhancement are described (279 references).

TL;DR: Graphene has emerged as a subject of enormous scientific interest due to its exceptional electron transport, mechanical properties, and high surface area, and when incorporated appropriately, these atomically thin carbon sheets can significantly improve physical properties of host polymers at extremely small loading.
Abstract: Graphene has emerged as a subject of enormous scientific interest due to its exceptional electron transport, mechanical properties, and high surface area. When incorporated appropriately, these atomically thin carbon sheets can significantly improve physical properties of host polymers at extremely small loading. We first review production routes to exfoliated graphite with an emphasis on top-down strategies starting from graphite oxide, including advantages and disadvantages of each method. Then solvent- and melt-based strategies to disperse chemically or thermally reduced graphene oxide in polymers are discussed. Analytical techniques for characterizing particle dimensions, surface characteristics, and dispersion in matrix polymers are also introduced. We summarize electrical, thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties of the graphene/polymer nanocomposites. We conclude this review listing current challenges associated with processing and scalability of graphene composites and future perspectives f...
