Abstract: An experimental study of boiling heat transfer from a simulated microelectronic component immersed in a stagnant pool of the dielectric Fluorinert (FC-72) is presented. Various enhancement surfaces were attached to an electrically heated copper calorimeter bar having a vertically oriented heat transfer surface area of 12.7 {times} 12.7 mm{sup 2}. A number of enhancement schemes aimed at a reduction of the incipience temperature overshoot were tested, employing various arrangement of fins, studs, grooves, and vapor-trapping cavities. Atmospheric pressure testing revealed a variation in the magnitude of boiling curve incipience temperature excursion as a function of both macro- and microcharacterization of the surface geometry and initial conditions (pressure and temperature history) prior to boiling. Increased incipience temperatures accompanied prolonged periods of nonboiling. It is assumed that this is due to vapor embryos within surface cavities collapsing to smaller radii. Large artificially created cavities (0.3 mm diameter) were found incapable of maintaining a stable vapor embryo for time periods greater than 10 min. In comparison to flat surfaces, low-profile surface geometries having a structure scale of the order of one bubble departure diameter resulted in significant enhancement of nucleate boiling while drilled surfaces had minimal effectiveness. Abstract: A high power electronic chip was simulated experimentally to investigate upper cooling capabilities using a variety of pool boiling enhancement techniques. Parametric effects of system pressure, subcooling, surface augmentation, and choice of coolant on boiling heat transfer from a vertical 12.7'x 12.7 mm flat surface were examined. The two fluorocarbon coolants tested, FC-72 and FC-87, resulted in similar boiling curves, but FC-87 significantly reduced chip surface temperature for a given heat flux. Increasing pressure enhanced boiling performance and critical heat flux slightly. However, the significant increase in chip temperature, and the practical problems associated with packaging electronic hardware in a pressurized environment precluded pressurization as a viable enhancement option. Subcooling was very effective in increasing critical heat flux and significantly reducing bubble size and growth of the bubble boundary layer on the chip surface. Surface augmentation was also effective in enhancing critical heat flux; however, some surface geometries promoted noticeable temperature excursion at incipience.

Abstract: In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, an orientation independent evaporator includes a wicking member which also operates as a manifold which possesses a number of surface accessible channels preferably via grooves cut in either side of a slab of wicking material at right angles to one another. The evaporator is, because of the structure of this wicking member, able to be operated in any orientation with respect to a gravitational field. The invention provides an improved evaporator for use in thermosyphons, and in particular, provides an improved mechanism for cooling electronic components.

A detection program running on the target computer system detects configuration information and attached devices and provides this information to a build program. The build program provides needed program components, applications, prerequisites and device drivers for the target computer according to build rules defined for the target computer type/model. Optionally, the detection program further detects that there are updates required for the detection program and installs the updates before proceeding with the build process.

Abstract: This paper explores the recent research developments in high-heat-flux thermal management. Cooling schemes such as pool boiling, detachable heat sinks, channel flow boiling, microchannel and mini-channel heat sinks, jet-impingement, and sprays, are discussed and compared relative to heat dissipation potential, reliability, and packaging concerns. It is demonstrated that, while different cooling options can be tailored to the specific needs of individual applications, system considerations always play a paramount role in determining the most suitable cooling scheme. It is also shown that extensive fundamental electronic cooling knowledge has been amassed over the past two decades. Yet there is now a growing need for hardware innovations rather than perturbations to those fundamental studies. An example of these innovations is the cooling of military avionics, where research findings from the electronic cooling literature have made possible the development of a new generation of cooling hardware which promise order of magnitude increases in heat dissipation compared to today's cutting edge avionics cooling schemes.

Abstract: PROTRACED COUNTERINSURGENCY: CHINESE COIN STRATEGY IN XINJIANG by MAJ J. Scott LaRonde, USA, 95 pages. In 1949, following the conclusion of its revolutionary war against the Chinese Nationalist forces, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) peacefully occupied China’s western most province of Xinjiang. For nearly sixty years, the PLA has conducted a counterinsurgency against several, mostly Uyghur-led, separatist movements. Despite periods of significant violence, particularly in the early 1950s and again in the 1990s, the separatist forces have not gained momentum and remained at a level one insurgency. Mao ZeDeng is revered as a master insurgent and the father of Fourth Generation Warfare. Strategists in armies worldwide study his writings on revolutionary and guerilla warfare. This monograph concludes that Mao, as well as the communist leaders who followed him, was also successful at waging protracted counterinsurgency. For nearly sixty years, separatist movements in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Taiwan have all failed. This monograph analyzes the conflict in Xinjiang and concludes that the Chinese continue to defeat the separatist movement in Xinjiang through a strategy that counters Mao’s seven fundamentals of revolutionary warfare.
