A high-capacity coherent ultradense wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network integrated with a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber system has been designed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. In this proposed architecture, millimeter-wave signal generation is achieved by coherent technology, in place of the optical carrier suppression technique, which requires modulators with large bandwidth and precise optical interleavers. The system fully exploits advantages of coherent access networks to provide both multigigabit wired and wireless access services with high spectral and power efficiencies. Successful wireless transmission of multichannel 3.3-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals with 10-GHz channel spacing over 50-km single-mode fiber (SMF-28) has been achieved.

Efficient Delivery of Integrated Wired and Wireless Services in UDWDM-RoF-PON Coherent Access Network

Abstract I have demonstrated a novel scheme to generate orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals for radio over fiber systems using a fiber bragg grating and a direct-modulation laser. I employ the FBG because the bandwidth of the optical modulator is largely reduced and the architecture of the ROF system is simpler. Because no expensive broadband external modulator is used, the overall system is considered as a cost-effective solution. The simple structure and low cost of the DD-OFDM system is attractive for the future cost-effective systems.

A Cost-effective DD-OFDM ROF System Employing FBG and DML to Generate Optical mm-Wave

We have investigated and experimentally demonstrated a ROF system employing FBG and low-cost DML to generate optical mm-wave. We employ FBG because the bandwidth of the optical modulator is largely reduced and the architecture of the ROF system is simpler. Because no expensive broadband external modulator is used, the overall system is considered as a cost-effective solution. Digital coherent optical communication technologies have shown superior performance in supporting high-bit-rate optical communications, including high fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance, and high spectral efficiency. We review the typical system design and principles of dual-polarization digital coherent optical communications, and further show a new dual-stage cascaded frequency offset estimator in achieving very high performance.
