Supermassive black holes (BHs) have been found in 85 galaxies by dynamical modeling of spatially resolved kinematics. The Hubble Space Telescope revolutionized BH research by advancing the subject from its proof-of-concept phase into quantitative studies of BH demographics. Most influential was the discovery of a tight correlation between BH mass and the velocity dispersion σ of the bulge component of the host galaxy. Together with similar correlations with bulge luminosity and mass, this led to the widespread belief that BHs and bulges coevolve by regulating each other's growth. Conclusions based on one set of correlations from in brightest cluster ellipticals to in the smallest galaxies dominated BH work for more than a decade. New results are now replacing this simple story with a richer and more plausible picture in which BHs correlate differently with different galaxy components. Coevolution (Or Not) of Supermassive Black Holes and Host Galaxies

This is the Supplemental Material to Kormendy and Ho 2013, ARAA, 51, 511 (arXiv:1304.7762). Section S1 summarizes indirect methods that are used to estimate black hole (BH) masses for galaxies with active nuclei (AGNs). Section S2 lists the observational criteria that are used to classify classical and pseudo bulges. The (pseudo)bulge classifications used in the main paper are not based on physical interpretation; rather, they are based on these observational criteria. Section S3 supplements the BH database in Section 5 of the main paper and Section S4 here. It discusses corrections to galaxy and BH parameters, most importantly to 2MASS K-band apparent magnitudes. It presents evidence that corrections are needed because 2MASS misses light at large radii when the images of galaxies subtend large angles on the sky or have shallow outer brightness gradients. Section S4 reproduces essentially verbatim the first part of Section 5 in the main paper, the BH database. It includes the list of BH and host-galaxy properties (Tables 2 and 3). Its most important purpose is to provide all of the notes on individual objects.

Coevolution (Or Not) of Supermassive Black Holes and Host Galaxies: Supplemental Material

Scaling relations between central black hole (BH) mass and host galaxy properties are of fundamental importance to studies of BH and galaxy evolution throughout cosmic time. Here we investigate the relationship between BH mass and host galaxy total stellar mass using a sample of 262 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the nearby Universe (z < 0.055), as well as 79 galaxies with dynamical BH masses. The vast majority of our AGN sample is constructed using Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopy and searching for Seyfert-like narrow-line ratios and broad H-alpha emission. BH masses are estimated using standard virial techniques. We also include a small number of dwarf galaxies with total stellar masses M_stellar < 10^9.5 Msun and a sub-sample of the reverberation-mapped AGNs. Total stellar masses of all 341 galaxies are calculated in the most consistent manner feasible using color-dependent mass-to-light ratios. We find a clear correlation between BH mass and total stellar mass for the AGN host galaxies, with M_BH proportional to M_stellar, similar to that of early-type galaxies with dynamically-detected BHs. However, the relation defined by the AGNs has a normalization that is lower by more than an order of magnitude, with a BH-to-total stellar mass fraction of M_BH/M_stellar ~ 0.025% across the stellar mass range 10^8 < M_stellar/Msun < 10^12. This result has significant implications for studies at high redshift and cosmological simulations in which stellar bulges cannot be resolved.

We combine Spitzer 3.6µm observations of a sample of disk galaxies spanning over 10 magnitudes in luminosity with optical luminosities and colors to test population synthesis prescriptions for computing stellar mass. Many commonly employed models fail to provide self-consistent results: the stellar mass estimated from the luminosity in one band can differ grossly from that of another band for the same galaxy. Independent models agree closely in the optical (V -band), but diverge at longer wavelengths. This effect is particularly pronounced in recent models with substantial contributions from TP-AGB stars. We provide revised color–mass-to-light ratio relations that yield self-consistent stellar masses when applied to real galaxies. The B − V color is a good indicator of the mass-to-light ratio. Some additional information is provided by V − I, but neither it nor J − Ks are particularly useful for constraining the mass-to-light ratio on their own. In the near-infrared, the mass-to-light ratio depends weakly on color, with typical values of 0.6 M⊙/L⊙ in the Ks-band and 0.47 M⊙/L⊙ at 3.6µm. Color--Mass-to-Light Ratio Relations for Disk Galaxies

Colour-M/L (mass-to-light) relations are a popular recipe to derive stellar mass in external galaxies. Stellar mass estimates often rely on near infrared (NIR) photometry, considered an optimal tracer since it is little affected by dust and by the "frosting" effect of recent star formation episodes. However, recent literature has highlighted that theoretical estimates of the NIR M/L ratio strongly depend on the modelling of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase. We use the latest Padova isochrones, with detailed modelling of the Thermally Pulsing AGB phase, to update theoretical colour-M/L relations in the optical and NIR and discuss the consequences for the estimated stellar masses in external galaxies. We also discuss the effect of attenuation by interstellar dust on colour-M/L relations in the statistical case of large galaxy samples.
