Abstract: This paper describes the development of a gas sensor system to be used as a sensing node to form a dense real-time environmental monitoring network. Moreover, a new auto-calibration method is proposed to achieve the maintenance-free operation of the sensor network. The network connectivity can be used not only for data collection but also for the calibration and diagnosis of the sensors since the measured pollutant concentrations can be easily compared through the network with nearby sensors and governmental monitoring stations. Different pollutant concentrations are usually monitored at different sites. However, a case study on local NO2 distribution has shown that there exists a special condition under which pollutant concentrations become low and uniform in a certain local area. The baseline of the gas sensor response can be adjusted in this special occasion using the pollutant concentration values reported from the neighboring environmental monitoring stations. The experimental result has shown that NO2 concentration can be measured with sufficient accuracy by incorporating appropriate temperature and humidity compensation into calibration curves. Moreover, a case study on auto-calibration demonstrates its effectiveness in keeping the measurement accuracy of the sensor system in long-term operation.

Abstract: A new method to remotely locate a gas/odor source using a mobile robot with gas sensors is proposed. Although several systems to search for a source have been already reported, the source location is not known until those systems finally arrive at the location. Since the proposed method enables the estimation of the distance to the source together with its direction, the source can be remotely located. Furthermore, the release rate of the gas and the range of its distribution can be obtained using the method. This feature is realized by moving the robot and fitting the gas distribution model to the gas sensor response at each location, taking the response delay into account. The soundness of the method is shown by the experiments on identification of an ethanol-gas-source location in a clean room.

Abstract: Many animals have the ability to search for odor sources by tracking their plumes. Some of the key features of this search behavior have been successfully transferred to robot platforms, although the capabilities of animals are still beyond the current level of sensor technologies. The examples described in this paper are (1) incorporating into a wheeled robot the upwind surges and casting used by moths in tracking pheromone plumes, (2) extracting useful information from the response patterns of a chemical sensor array patterned after the spatially distributed chemoreceptors of some animals, and (3) mimicking the fanning behavior of silkworm moths to enhance the reception of chemical signals by drawing molecules from one direction. The achievements so far and current efforts are reviewed to illustrate the steps to be taken toward future development of this technology.

Abstract: The field of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has witnessed tremendous growth in synthetic sophistication and depth of characterization over the past 15 years.1 However, it is interesting to comment on the modest beginning and on important milestones. The field really began much earlier than is now recognized. In 1946 Zisman published the preparation of a monomolecular layer by adsorption (self-assembly) of a surfactant onto a clean metal surface.2 At that time, the potential of self-assembly was not recognized, and this publication initiated only a limited level of interest. Early work initiated in Kuhn’s laboratory at Gottingen, applying many years of experience in using chlorosilane derivative to hydrophobize glass, was followed by the more recent discovery, when Nuzzo and Allara showed that SAMs of alkanethiolates on gold can be prepared by adsorption of di-n-alkyl disulfides from dilute solutions.3 Getting away from the moisture-sensitive alkyl trichlorosilanes, as well as working with crystalline gold surfaces, were two important reasons for the success of these SAMs. Many self-assembly systems have since been investigated, but monolayers of alkanethiolates on gold are probably the most studied SAMs to date. The formation of monolayers by self-assembly of surfactant molecules at surfaces is one example of the general phenomena of self-assembly. In nature, self-assembly results in supermolecular hierarchical organizations of interlocking components that provides very complex systems.4 SAMs offer unique opportunities to increase fundamental understanding of self-organization, structure-property relationships, and interfacial phenomena. The ability to tailor both head and tail groups of the constituent molecules makes SAMs excellent systems for a more fundamental understanding of phenomena affected by competing intermolecular, molecular-substrates and molecule-solvent interactions like ordering and growth, wetting, adhesion, lubrication, and corrosion. That SAMs are well-defined and accessible makes them good model systems for studies of physical chemistry and statistical physics in two dimensions, and the crossover to three dimensions. SAMs provide the needed design flexibility, both at the individual molecular and at the material levels, and offer a vehicle for investigation of specific interactions at interfaces, and of the effect of increasing molecular complexity on the structure and stability of two-dimensional assemblies. These studies may eventually produce the design capabilities needed for assemblies of three-dimensional structures.5 However, this will require studies of more complex systems and the combination of what has been learned from SAMs with macromolecular science. The exponential growth in SAM research is a demonstration of the changes chemistry as a disciAbraham Ulman was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1946. He studied chemistry in the Bar-Ilan University in Ramat-Gan, Israel, and received his B.Sc. in 1969. He received his M.Sc. in phosphorus chemistry from Bar-Ilan University in 1971. After a brief period in industry, he moved to the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, and received his Ph.D. in 1978 for work on heterosubstituted porphyrins. He then spent two years at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where his main interest was onedimensional organic conductors. In 1985 he joined the Corporate Research Laboratories of Eastman Kodak Company, in Rochester, NY, where his research interests were molecular design of materials for nonlinear optics and self-assembled monolayers. In 1994 he moved to Polytechnic University where he is the Alstadt-Lord-Mark Professor of Chemistry. Abstract: Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have lived to see great improvements in recent years. This review presents new insight into conduction mechanisms and performance characteristics, as well as opportunities for modeling properties of OTFTs. The shifted focus in research from novel chemical structures to fabrication technologies that optimize morphology and structural order is underscored by chapters on vacuum-deposited and solution-processed organic semiconducting films. Finally, progress in the growing field of the n-type OTFTs is discussed in ample detail. The Figure, showing a pentacene film edge on SiO2, illustrates the morphology issue.

Abstract: Conventional approaches to chemical sensors have traditionally made use of a “lock-and-key” design, wherein a specific receptor is synthesized in order to strongly and highly selectively bind the analyte of interest.1-6 A related approach involves exploiting a general physicochemical effect selectively toward a single analyte, such as the use of the ionic effect in the construction of a pH electrode. In the first approach, selectivity is achieved through recognition of the analyte at the receptor site, and in the second, selectivity is achieved through the transduction process in which the method of detection dictates which species are sensed. Such approaches are appropriate when a specific target compound is to be identified in the presence of controlled backgrounds and interferences. However, this type of approach requires the synthesis of a separate, highly selective sensor for each analyte to be detected. In addition, this type of approach is not particularly useful for analyzing, classifying, or assigning human value judgments to the composition of complex vapor mixtures such as perfumes, beers, foods, mixtures of solvents, etc.
