TL;DR: It is proved that out of these three requirements for steady-state heat engines, driven by a constant temperature difference between the two heat baths, only two are compatible.
Abstract: Heat engines should ideally have large power output, operate close to Carnot efficiency and show constancy, ie, exhibit only small fluctuations in this output For steady-state heat engines, driven by a constant temperature difference between the two heat baths, we prove that out of these three requirements only two are compatible Constancy enters quantitatively the conventional trade-off between power and efficiency Thus, we rationalize and unify recent suggestions for overcoming this simple trade-off Our universal bound is illustrated for a paradigmatic model of a quantum dot solar cell and for a Brownian gyrator delivering mechanical work against an external force

TL;DR: For a small system like a colloidal particle or a single biomolecule embedded in a heat bath, the optimal protocol of an external control parameter minimizes the mean work required to drive the system from one given equilibrium state to another in a finite time.
Abstract: For a small system like a colloidal particle or a single biomolecule embedded in a heat bath, the optimal protocol of an external control parameter minimizes the mean work required to drive the system from one given equilibrium state to another in a finite time. In general, this optimal protocol obeys an integro-differential equation. Explicit solutions both for a moving laser trap and a time-dependent strength of such a trap show finite jumps of the optimal protocol to be typical both at the beginning and at the end of the process.

TL;DR: The first lawlike balance between applied work, exchanged heat, and internal energy on the level of a single trajectory is demonstrated, and the observed distribution of applied work is distinctly non-Gaussian in good agreement with numerical calculations.
Abstract: We study the motion of an overdamped colloidal particle in a time-dependent nonharmonic potential. We demonstrate the first lawlike balance between applied work, exchanged heat, and internal energy on the level of a single trajectory. The observed distribution of applied work is distinctly non-Gaussian in good agreement with numerical calculations. Both the Jarzynski relation and a detailed fluctuation theorem are verified with good accuracy.

TL;DR: In this article, a class of cyclic Brownian heat engines in the framework of finite-time thermodynamics was studied and it was shown that for infinitely long cycle times, the engine works at the Carnot efficiency limit producing zero power.
Abstract: We study a class of cyclic Brownian heat engines in the framework of finite-time thermodynamics. For infinitely long cycle times, the engine works at the Carnot efficiency limit producing, however, zero power. For the efficiency at maximum power, we find a universal expression, different from the endoreversible Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency. Our results are illustrated with a simple one-dimensional engine working in and with a time-dependent harmonic potential.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dispersion relation for a fluid bilayer membrane was determined by taking into account the coupling between bending and the local density of the two monolayers, damped by inter-monolayer friction.
Abstract: We determine the dispersion relation for a fluid bilayer membrane, taking into account the coupling between bending and the local density of the two monolayers. Apart from important corrections to the conventional bending mode, we obtain a second slow mode which is essentially a fluctuation in the density difference of the two monolayers, damped by inter-monolayer friction. Estimates for a stack of membranes show reasonable agreement with a recent spin-echo study of membrane undulations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report, extend, and interpret much of our current understanding relating to theories of noise-activated escape, for which many of the notable contributions are originating from the communities both of physics and of physical chemistry.
Abstract: The calculation of rate coefficients is a discipline of nonlinear science of importance to much of physics, chemistry, engineering, and biology. Fifty years after Kramers' seminal paper on thermally activated barrier crossing, the authors report, extend, and interpret much of our current understanding relating to theories of noise-activated escape, for which many of the notable contributions are originating from the communities both of physics and of physical chemistry. Theoretical as well as numerical approaches are discussed for single- and many-dimensional metastable systems (including fields) in gases and condensed phases. The role of many-dimensional transition-state theory is contrasted with Kramers' reaction-rate theory for moderate-to-strong friction; the authors emphasize the physical situation and the close connection between unimolecular rate theory and Kramers' work for weakly damped systems. The rate theory accounting for memory friction is presented, together with a unifying theoretical approach which covers the whole regime of weak-to-moderate-to-strong friction on the same basis (turnover theory). The peculiarities of noise-activated escape in a variety of physically different metastable potential configurations is elucidated in terms of the mean-first-passage-time technique. Moreover, the role and the complexity of escape in driven systems exhibiting possibly multiple, metastable stationary nonequilibrium states is identified. At lower temperatures, quantum tunneling effects start to dominate the rate mechanism. The early quantum approaches as well as the latest quantum versions of Kramers' theory are discussed, thereby providing a description of dissipative escape events at all temperatures. In addition, an attempt is made to discuss prominent experimental work as it relates to Kramers' reaction-rate theory and to indicate the most important areas for future research in theory and experiment.
