Multi-criteria decision making approaches for supplier evaluation and selection: A literature review

Global supplier development is a multi-criterion decision problem which includes both qualitative and quantitative factors. The global supplier selection problem is more complex than domestic one and it needs more critical analysis. The aim of this paper is to identify and discuss some of the important and critical decision criteria including risk factors for the development of an efficient system for global supplier selection. Fuzzy extended analytic hierarchy process (FEAHP) based methodology will be discussed to tackle the different decision criteria like cost, quality, service performance and supplier's profile including the risk factors involved in the selection of global supplier in the current business scenario. FEAHP is an efficient tool to handle the fuzziness of the data involved in deciding the preferences of different decision variables. The linguistic level of comparisons produced by the customers and experts for each comparison are tapped in the form triangular fuzzy numbers to construct fuzzy pair-wise comparison matrices. The implementation of the system is demonstrated by a problem having four stages of hierarchy which contains different criteria and attributes at wider perspective. The proposed model can provide not only a framework for the organization to select the global supplier but also has the capability to deploy the organization's strategy to its supplier.

Global supplier development considering risk factors using fuzzy extended AHP-based approach

In this paper the authors review the developments of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) since its inception. The focus of this paper is a neutral review on the methodological developments rather than reporting its applications that have appeared since its introduction. In particular, we discuss problem modelling, pair-wise comparisons, judgement scales, derivation methods, consistency indices, incomplete matrix, synthesis of the weights, sensitivity analysis and group decisions. All have been important areas of research in AHP.

Review of the main developments in the analytic hierarchy process

With growing worldwide awareness of environmental protection, green production has become an important issue for almost every manufacturer and will determine the sustainability of a manufacturer in the long term. A performance evaluation system for green suppliers thus is necessary to determine the suitability of suppliers to cooperate with the firm. While the works on the evaluation and/or selection of suppliers are abundant, those that concern environmental issues are rather limited. Therefore, in this study, a model for evaluating green suppliers is proposed. The Delphi method is applied first to differentiate the criteria for evaluating traditional suppliers and green suppliers. A hierarchy is constructed next to help evaluate the importance of the selected criteria and the performance of green suppliers. Since experts may not identify the importance of factors clearly, the results of questionnaires may be biased. To consider the vagueness of experts' opinions, the fuzzy extended analytic hierarchy process is exploited. With the proposed model, manufacturers can have a better understanding of the capabilities that a green supplier must possess and can evaluate and select the most suitable green supplier for cooperation.

A green supplier selection model for high-tech industry

Two decades was systematically reviewed on fuzzy MCDM techniques from 1994 to 2014.The database for review was 403 papers from more than 150 high-ranking journals.403 scholarly papers were grouped in four different main fields.Papers were classified based on utilizing, developing and proposing research papers. MCDM is considered as a complex decision-making tool involving both quantitative and qualitative factors. In recent years, several fuzzy FMCDM tools have been suggested to choosing the optimal probably options. The purpose of this paper is to review systematically the applications and methodologies of the fuzzy multi decision-making (FMCDM) techniques. This study reviewed a total of 403 papers published from 1994 to 2014 in more than 150 peer reviewed journals (extracted from online databases such as ScienceDirect, Springer, Emerald, Wiley, ProQuest, and Taylor & Francis). According to experts' opinions, these papers were grouped into four main fields: engineering, management and business, science, and technology. Furthermore, these papers were categorized based on authors, publication date, country of origin, methods, tools, and type of research (FMCDM utilizing research, FMCDM developing research, and FMCDM proposing research). The results of this study indicated that, in 2013, scholars have published papers more than other years. In addition, hybrid fuzzy MCDM in the integrated method and fuzzy AHP in the individual section were ranked as the first and second methods in use. Additionally, Taiwan was ranked as the first country that contributed to this survey, and engineering was ranked as the first field that has applied fuzzy DM tools and techniques.

Fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making techniques and applications - Two decades review from 1994 to 2014

A supplier selection decision inherently is a multi‐criterion problem. It is a decision of strategic importance to companies. The nature of this decision usually is complex and unstructured. Management science techniques might be helpful tools for these kinds of decision‐making problems. The aim of this paper is to use fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to select the best supplier firm providing the most satisfaction for the criteria determined. The purchasing managers of a white good manufacturer established in Turkey were interviewed and the most important criteria taken into account by the managers while they were selecting their supplier firms were determined by a questionnaire. The fuzzy AHP was used to compare these supplier firms.

Multi-attribute comparison of catering service companies using fuzzy AHP: The case of Turkey

An enterprise resource planning system (ERP) is the information backbone of a company that integrates and automates all business operations. It is a critical issue to select the suitable ERP system which meets all the business strategies and the goals of the company. This study presents an approach to select a suitable ERP system for textile industry. Textile companies have some difficulties to implement ERP systems such as variant structure of products, production variety and unqualified human resources. At first, the vision and the strategies of the organization are checked by using balanced scorecard. According to the company's vision, strategies and KPIs, we can prepare a request for proposal. Then ERP packages that do not meet the requirements of the company are eliminated. After strategic management phase, the proposed methodology gives advice before ERP selection. The criteria were determined and then compared according to their importance. The rest ERP system solutions were selected to evaluate. An external evaluation team consisting of ERP consultants was assigned to select one of these solutions according to the predetermined criteria. In this study, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, a fuzzy extension of the multi-criteria decision-making technique AHP, was used to compare these ERP system solutions. The methodology was applied for a textile manufacturing company.

Fuzzy AHP-based decision support system for selecting ERP systems in textile industry by using balanced scorecard

Depending on the high consumption in the world, the amount of waste increases. One of the critical waste types to be handled is the electrical and electronic waste (WEEE). The recovery of WEEE is very important both from environmental and economic aspects and has become mandatory in most of the countries in the world. Reverse logistics which is mainly the backward flows of used products from consumers to producers is an important stage while constructing a recovery system. The network structure of reverse logistics system plays an important role in the total cost of the recovery system. These structures mainly include the locations of facilities and the flows between the related points. With this study, a reverse logistics system is designed for WEEE in Turkey which is one of the fast developing countries in the world. Ten scenarios are taken into account regarding different collection rates via a mixed integer linear programming model. Different types of storage sites and recycling facilities are considered within the model differing from the existing studies. The optimum locations of storage sites and recycling facilities are obtained for each scenario satisfying the minimum recycling rates stated by the European Union directive for each product category.

Reverse logistics system design for the waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Turkey

Quality consultants are used in ISO 9000 implementation projects especially by many small and medium-sized enterprises. Clients do not always appreciate differences between quality consultants. This paper aims to provide an analytical tool to select the best quality consultant providing the most customer satisfaction. The clients of three Turkish quality consultancy firms were interviewed and the most important criteria taken into account by the clients while they were selecting their consultancy firms were determined by a designed questionnaire. The fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was applied to compare these consultancy firms. The means of the triangular fuzzy numbers produced by the customers and experts for each comparison were successfully used in the pair wise comparison matrices.
