CO2 sorption at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures is a key step towards carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and materials capable of fast and efficient CO2 uptake are currently being studied extensively. Carbide-derived carbons (CDCs) show a very high sorption capacity for CO2 of up to 7.1 mol/kg at 0 °C and ambient pressure. This value is significantly higher than other carbon materials. Systematic experimental investigation of a large number of different CDCs derived from nano- and micrometer sized precursors with and without activation show a linear correlation between the CO2 uptake at a certain pressure and the pore volume. However, CO2 sorption is not limited by the total pore volume but only by pores smaller than a certain diameter. At 1 bar, pores smaller than 0.8 nm contribute the most to the CO2 uptake and at 0.1 bar pores smaller or equal to 0.5 nm are preferred. With lower total pressure, smaller pores contribute more to the measured amount of adsorbed CO2. The prediction of the CO2 uptake based on the pore volume for pores of a certain diameter is much more accurate than predictions based on the mean pore size or the specific surface area. This study provides guidelines for the design of materials with an improved ability to remove carbon dioxide from the environment at atmospheric and lower pressures.

Effect of pore size on carbon dioxide sorption by carbide derived carbon

Mixed-ligand complexes of copper(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline and various Schiff bases have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, electronic and i.r. spectra, magnetic moment and molar conductance data. The Schiff base behave as bidentate ligands, and the mixed-ligand copper(II) complexes of the ligands HL1′′, HL2′′ and HL4′′ are binuclear. The conductivity data for all the complexes are consistent with those expected for an electrolyte. Antimicrobial activities of some of the ligands and complexes have been tested against Bacillus megaterium and Candida tropicalis. 1H and 13C n.m.r. spectra have been recorded in order to solve the solution structure of the ligands. Thermal properties of all complexes have been studied by the d.t.a. and t.g.a. techniques.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Spectral Properties of a 2D Supramolecular Copper(II) Complex With 1-(4-{[(E)-3- ethoxyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene]amino}phenyl)ethanone Oxime

Coordination compounds of MnII, CoII, NiII, CuII, ZnII, CdII and HgII ions with o-aminoacetophenone o-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone (AAOHBH) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductivity, magnetic moments (at ca. 25 °C) and spectral (i.r., u.v., n.m.r. and m.s.) studies. The i.r. spectra show that the ligand acts in a monovalent bidentate, neutral bidentate and/or neutral tridentate fashion, depending on the metal salt used and the reaction medium. Tetrahedral structures are proposed for both CoII and NiII complexes and square planar for CuII complexes on the basis of magnetic and spectral evidence. The complex formation in solution was investigated potentiometrically and spectrophotometrically. Spectral studies in solution show that the ligand can be used for the microdetermination of CoII ion within a metal concentration up to 46.3 p.p.m. The electrical conductivity of AAOHBH and its metal complexes was determined. The tendency of AAOHBH to form complexes with CoII, NiII, CuII, CdII and HgII ions in 50% aqueous-dioxane was studied by pH measurements.

Synthesis, spectral and antimicrobial activity studies of o-aminoacetophenone o-hydroxybenzoylhydrazone complexes

A new Cu(II) complex, [Cu(L)2], has been synthesized via the complexation of copper(II) acetate monohydrate with a new oxime-type ligand (HL = 1-(3-{[(E)-3-bromo-5-chloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene]amino}phenyl)ethanone oxime). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that the complex is a mononuclear complex. The Cu(II) atom is four-coordinated by the phenolate O atoms and imine N atoms from two oxime-type ligands, in a square-planar geometry in which the dihedral angle of two coordination plane (Cu1N1O1 and Cu1N#1O#1) is 0°. The crystal packing of the Cu(II) complex shows that a notable feature of this structure resides in the formation of a novel 3D supramolecular networks through intermolecular O–H···N, C–H···O, and C–H···π interactions. Es wurden Komplexe des Blei(IV)chlorids mit zweizahnigenSchiffschen Basen hergestellt. Aus den Analysenergebnissen ergibt sich die Stochiometrie als 1∶2. Die Komplexe sind inDMF Nichtelektrolyte und scheinen oktaedrische Struktur zu besitzen. Die UV- und IR-Spektren der Komplexe werden diskutiert und mogliche Strukturen vorgeschlagen.
