[i] An inventory of air pollutant emissions in Asia in the year 2000 is developed to support atmospheric modeling and analysis of observations taken during the TRACE-P experiment funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the ACE-Asia experiment funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Emissions are estimated for all major anthropogenic sources, including biomass burning, in 64 regions of Asia. We estimate total Asian emissions as follows: 34.3 Tg SO 2 , 26.8 Tg NO x , 9870 Tg CO 2 , 279 Tg CO, 107 Tg CH 4 , 52.2 Tg NMVOC, 2.54 Tg black carbon (BC), 10.4 Tg organic carbon (OC), and 27.5 Tg NH 3 . In addition, NMVOC are speciated into 19 subcategories according to functional groups and reactivity. Thus we are able to identify the major source regions and types for many of the significant gaseous and particle emissions that influence pollutant concentrations in the vicinity of the TRACE-P and ACE-Asia field measurements. Emissions in China dominate the signature of pollutant concentrations in this region, so special emphasis has been placed on the development of emission estimates for China. China's emissions are determined to be as follows: 20.4 Tg SO 2 , 11.4 Tg NO x , 3820 Tg CO 2 , 116 Tg CO, 38.4 Tg CH 4 , 17.4 Tg NMVOC, 1.05 Tg BC, 3.4 Tg OC, and 13.6 Tg NH 3 . Emissions are gridded at a variety of spatial resolutions from 1° × 1° to 30 s x 30 s, using the exact locations of large point sources and surrogate GIS distributions of urban and rural population, road networks, landcover, ship lanes, etc. The gridded emission estimates have been used as inputs to atmospheric simulation models and have proven to be generally robust in comparison with field observations, though there is reason to think that emissions of CO and possibly BC may be underestimated. Monthly emission estimates for China are developed for each species to aid TRACE-P and ACE-Asia data interpretation. During the observation period of March/ April, emissions are roughly at their average values (one twelfth of annual). Uncertainties in the emission estimates, measured as 95% confidence intervals, range from a low of ±16% for SO 2 to a high of ±450% for OC.

What is the Competition

Power electronics has progressively gained an important status in power generation, distribution, and consumption. With more than 70% of electricity processed through power electronics, recent research endeavors to improve the reliability of power electronic systems to comply with more stringent constraints on cost, safety, and availability in various applications. This paper serves to give an overview of the major aspects of reliability in power electronics and to address the future trends in this multidisciplinary research direction. The ongoing paradigm shift in reliability research is presented first. Then, the three major aspects of power electronics reliability are discussed, respectively, which cover physics-of-failure analysis of critical power electronic components, state-of-the-art design for reliability process and robustness validation, and intelligent control and condition monitoring to achieve improved reliability under operation. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for achieving more reliable power electronic systems in the future are discussed.

Transitioning to Physics-of-Failure as a Reliability Driver in Power Electronics

This paper presents the design of new high-frequency transformer isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter modules connected in input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) for 20-kVA-solid-state transformer. The ISOP modular structure enables the use of low-voltage MOSFETs, featuring low on-state resistance and resulted conduction losses, to address medium-voltage input. A phase-shift dual-half-bridge (DHB) converter is employed to achieve high-frequency galvanic isolation, bidirectional power flow, and zero voltage switching (ZVS) of all switching devices, which leads to low switching losses even with high-frequency operation. Furthermore, an adaptive inductor is proposed as the main energy transfer element of a phase-shift DHB converter so that the circulating energy can be optimized to maintain ZVS at light load and minimize the conduction losses at heavy load as well. As a result, high efficiency over wide load range and high power density can be achieved. In addition, current stress of switching devices can be reduced. A planar transformer adopting printed-circuit-board windings arranged in an interleaved structure is designed to obtain low core and winding loss, solid isolation, and identical parameters in multiple modules. Moreover, the modular structure along with a distributed control provides plug-and-play capability and possible high-level fault tolerance. The experimental results on 1 kW DHB converter modules switching at 50 kHz are presented to validate the theoretical analysis.

High-Frequency Transformer Isolated Bidirectional DC–DC Converter Modules With High Efficiency Over Wide Load Range for 20 kVA Solid-State Transformer

This paper investigates DC/DC conversion systems constructed from connecting multiple converter modules in series and/or parallel at both the input and output sides. Control strategies aiming at achieving proper sharing of the voltage and/or current at the input or output sides are studied in detail. The relationship between sharing of input voltages/currents and that of output voltages/currents is studied. In particular, the inherent stability of control operations applied at the input side and the output side is analyzed. Based on the analysis, a general control strategy for series-parallel systems, which decouples the output voltage control loop and the sharing control loop, is proposed. Furthermore, three modularization architectures are proposed for input-series-output-parallel (ISOP), input-parallel-output-series (IPOS), and input-series-output-series (ISOS) connected systems. These architectures enjoy full advantages of modularization and no external controller is needed to coordinate the sharing control for the individual modules. Experimental prototypes are built and tested to validate the general control strategy and the proposed modularization architectures.

DC/DC Conversion Systems Consisting of Multiple Converter Modules: Stability, Control, and Experimental Verifications

This paper proposes a simple control method to achieve active sharing of input voltage and load current among modular converters that are connected in series at the input and in parallel at the output. The input-series connection enables a fully modular power-system architecture, where low voltage and low power modules can be connected in any combination at the input and/or at the output, to realize any given specifications. Further, the input-series connection enables the use of low-voltage MOSFETs that are optimized for very low RDSON , thus, resulting in lower conduction losses. In the proposed scheme, the duty ratio to all the converter modules connected in input-series and output-parallel (ISOP) configuration is made common. This scheme does not require a dedicated input-voltage or load-current-share controller. It relies on the inherent self-correcting characteristic of the ISOP connection when the duty ratio of all the converters is the same. The proposed scheme is analyzed using the average model of a forward converter. The stability and performance of the scheme are verified through numerical simulation, both in frequency domain and in time domain. The proposed control method is also validated on an experimental prototype ISOP system comprising of two forward converters

Common-duty-ratio control of input-series connected modular DC-DC converters with active input voltage and load-current sharing

This paper presents a modular, fault tolerant dc-dc converter topology that utilizes common duty ratio control to ensure equal sharing of input voltage and output current in input-series output-parallel configuration. The input-series connection allows the use of low voltage MOSFET's optimized for very low RDS,ON resulting in lower conduction losses. The common-duty-ratio scheme does not require a dedicated control loop for input voltage or output current sharing. The fault tolerant protection and control scheme accommodates failure of one or more modules, and ensures input voltage and load current sharing among the remaining healthy modules. The design of a new sensing scheme for detection of fault is presented. The analysis of the topology and the underlying principles are presented. The dependence of peak current from the source and in the protection switch in case of failure of a single converter has been analyzed and the various design tradeoff issues are discussed. The theoretical predictions are validated with simulation and experimental results. The proposed method is simple and gives good dynamic response to changes in input, load, and during fault. This topology is especially suited for space applications where a high level of fault tolerance can be achieved through designed redundancy.

Fault Tolerant Circuit Topology and Control Method for Input-Series and Output-Parallel Modular DC-DC Converters

A buck-boost converter with smooth transitions is disclosed. A buck-boost converter controller is disclosed including a first high side driver switch gate control signal output for controlling a first high side driver device; a first low side driver switch gate control signal output for controlling a first low side driver device; a second high side driver switch gate control signal output for controlling a second high side driver device; a second low side driver switch gate control signal output for controlling a second low side driver device; a state machine having four states comprising a buck state, a boost state, a transition buck state, and a transition boost state; a hysteresis timer indicating a pulse width greater than a predetermined threshold coupled to the state machine; and a minimum timer indicating a pulse width less than a predetermined threshold coupled to the state machine. Methods are also disclosed.

Buck-Boost Converter with Smooth Transition Circuits and Methods

Indian economy is mainly based on agriculture. The most important parameter for the agriculture is timely and sufficient supply of water. Most of the farmers are dependent on electric water pumps for irrigation which demands electricity. The frequent, intermittent, low voltage supply of power to the agriculture sector has caused problems to the farmers who are spending their time monitoring the supply of power without which their work cannot start. The highly unreliable power supply with frequent power cuts have not only lowered the efficiency of farmers but also have led to the frustration of the farmer to give up agriculture and move to urban areas for better prospects in the globalized world. In my paper I am going to propose a system which shows, how mobile technology can benefit millions of farmers in rural India by providing a solution for the irrigation problems caused by intermittent electrical power supply. The goal of this paper is to design an embedded device, which can control up to 8 devices by sending a specific SMS message from a cell-phone. This controller is extremely handy at places where we have to control the ON and OFF switching of the devices but no wired connection to that place is available.

Bamboo has a vital importance in the lives of the native tribes and is extensively grown in varied climatic zones It is a valuable and renewable natural resource India is one of the richest countries in terms of bamboo resources with about 136 species In this review, we tried to collect and systematically arrange all the available important literature on nutritional importance of bamboo with special emphasis on the traditional foods and future processing avenues New bamboo culms that come out of the ground, called shoots are usually used in Asian cookery in various ways (raw, canned, boiled, marinated, fermented, frozen and liquid) Bamboo provides moisture (893 %), low fat (041 g/100g), high dietary fibre (390 %), and mineral content (103 %) It is also a good source of thiamine, niacin, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and vitamin E However, they contain a potentially toxic glycoside of α -hydroxynitrile, called taxiphyllin Trade potential of bamboo is not fully exploited, though it has the prospective to ensure livelihood security, in both rural and urban areas As it is a seasonal product and delicate in nature, processing and preservation of bamboo products are the important steps to make bamboo accessible in developing countries Nutraceutical potential of bamboo shoot is also explored in this review
