This survey is a review of technical papers in the area of numerical heat transfer (NHT) published in 1990 and 1991 and is a continuation of past literature surveys. The journals surveyed in this article include (1) Numerical Heat Transfer, Part A (2) Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B (3) International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, (4) ASME Journal of Heat Transfer (5) International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, (6) Journal of Computational Physics, and (7) AIAA Journal. Several other archival journals, such as Journal of Fluid Mechanics, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis, Computers and Fluids, Symposia (International) on Combustion, Combustion and Flames, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, Communication on Pure and Applied Mathematics, and Applied Mathematical Modeling, occasionally publish works in the area of NHT. However, they are not surveyed. It is hoped that the relevant papers are cited in the references listed in this article. For ease of presentation, the survey is divided into 16 technical categories. Naturally, many papers cover more than one topic. In this case, they are categorized under the main topic and are cross referenced under others. Literature survey on numerical heat transfer (1990-1991)

Laminar natural convection in rectangular enclosures divided by a single thin partition is studied numerically by the finite-element method. Special emphasis is given to enclosures with aspect ratios less than 1, although the results for aspect ratios of 1 have also been reported for comparison. The effect on flow structure and heat transfer of shifting the partition in the enclosure has also been investigated. While the Prandtl number is held at unity, the Rayteigh number is considered over a wide range, that is, from 103 to 106, and the aspect ratio assumed the values of I, 0.8, 0.5, and 0.4.

Natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure with a partition-a finite-element analysis

Natural convection in a square cavity with a centrally located partition is considered. While one of the side walls is fully active, the other is partly insulated. Numerical simulation, based on the finite element method, has been carried out for different lengths of the active surface. The results have been compared with the cases when the cavity is without partition as well as the case of a partitioned cavity with fully active side walls.

Finite element analysis of a partitioned cavity under mixed thermal conditions

Numerical results are reported for two cases of (1) a differentially heated corner region with a cold wall on the top as well as a corner formed by a cold vertical wall and a heated horizontal wall and (2) a cavity heated from below and partially cooled along one side. Finite element simulations indicate several interesting features of the flow structures in these two cases.
