A taxonomic revision of the Nematotaeniidae, involving the examination of over 400 specimens, was undertaken. Some new taxonomic characters have been introduced to allow distinction of the various species. The family contains 18 recognized species in four genera. The genusNematotaenia Luhe, 1910 contains four species, namelyN. chantalae Dollfus, 1957,N. dispar (Goeze, 1782) Luhe, 1910,N. hylae Hickman, 1960, andN. tarentolae Lopez-Neyra, 1944.N. kashmirensis Fotedar, 1966,N. dollfusi, Yuen & Fernando, 1974 andN. viride Mokhtar-Maamouri & Chakroun, 1984 are considered junior synonyms ofN. dispar. N. aurangabadensis Chincholikar & Shinde, 1975,N. lopezneyrai Soler, 1945 andN. mabuiae Shinde, 1968 are consideredspecies inquirendae: the latter species probably belongs in the genusOochoristica Luhe, 1898 (Anoplocephalidae: Linstowiinae). The genusCylindrotaenia Jewell, 1916 is shown to possess two testes per segment and not one as originally proposed:Baerietta Hsu, 1935 is consequently synonymized withCylindrotaenia. Cylindrotaenia is divided into five species-groups on the basis of adult morphology. The first group contains two American species, namelyC. americana Jewell, 1916 andC. idahoensis (Waitz & Mehra, 1961) n. comb. The second group contains species from Australia and New Zealand, namelyC. allisonae (Schmidt, 1980), n. comb.,C. criniae (Hickman, 1960) n. comb.,C. decidua (Ainsworth, 1985) n. comb.,C. hickmani (Jones, 1985) n. comb. andC. minor (Hickman, 1960) n. comb. A third species group consists ofC. jaegerskioeldi (Janicki, 1926) n. comb.,C. magna n. sp. andC. philauti Crusz & Sanmugasunderam, 1971 and occurs in Africa, Sri Lanka and Japan. The fourth group, apparently restricted to Japan, contains a single species,C. japonica (Yamaguti, 1938) n. comb. The fifth group containsC. montana (Yamaguti, 1954) n. comb. and occurs in Japan and Tibet.C. quadrijugosa Lawler, 1939 is synonymized withC. americana, andBaerietta claviformis Yamaguti, 1954 is synonymized withC. japonica. C. baeri (Hsu, 1935) n. comb.,C. chilensis (Puga & Franjola, 1983) n. comb.,C. diana (Helfer, 1948) Lehmann, 1960,C. malayi (Yuen & Fernando, 1974) n. comb. andC. roonwali Nama, 1972 arespecies inquirendae. The genusDistoichometra, Dickey 1921 contains a single species, namelyD. bufonis Dickey, 1921.D. kozloffi Douglas, 1958 andBaerietta enteraneides (Helfer, 1948) Yamaguti, 1959 are reduced to synonymy withD. bufonis. Bitegmen n. g. is proposed to accomodate a single species,B. gerrhonoti (Telford, 1965) n. comb., which was previously included in the genusBaerietta. The present distribution of the Nematotaeniidae is largely related to that of their anuran hosts. Nematotaeniids probably arose in Gondwanaland.

A taxonomic revision of the Nematotaeniidae Lühe, 1910 (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea)

One species of digenean, Zeylanurotrema sphenomorphi n. sp., and 2 nematode species, Meteterakis crombiei n. sp. and Physalopteroides milnensis n. sp., from the intestine of Sphenomorphus jobiensis, are described and illustrated. Zeylanurotrema sphenomorphi n. sp. represents the second species, Meteterakis crombiei n. sp. the 18th species, and Physalopteroides milnensis n. sp. the 19th species assigned to each respective genus. In addition, 1 species of cestode, Oochoristica javaensis; 7 nematode species, Abbreviata oligopapillata, Aplectana macintoshii, Aplectana zweifeli, Cosmocerca zugi, Maxvachonia adamsoni, Oswaldocruzia bakeri, Parapharyngodon maplestonei; 1 species of acanthocephalan, Acanthocephalus bufonis; and 1 species of pentastome, Kiricephalus sp., were found. With the exception of Abbreviata oligopapillata, Sphenomorphus jobiensis represents a new host record for each species of endoparasite.

The morphological characteristics of each species are analysed. The most important characteristics are provided by the disposition of the caudal bursal rays, the morphology of the synlophe (at the oesophago-intestinal junction and mid-body level) and by the anatomy of the spicules. Endoparasites in 12 species of Sphenomorphus (Squamata: Scincidae) from Papua New Guinea.

An initial survey of the helminth parasites of several endemic vertebrate hosts, particularly relict agamid lizards, collected in the montane zone of Ceylon, has shown a general paucity of trematode species.Paradistomoides ceratophorae (Dollfus, 1923) is reported from the gall bladder and liver of Ceratophora stoddarti and of two new hosts, Cophotis ceylanica and Calotes nigrilabris. A new urotrematid genus and species, Zeylanurotrema lyriocephali, is described from the urinary bladder of the relict hump-nosed lizard, Lyriocephalus scutatus. The new genus is characterised by the absence of œsophagus and cirrus sac, the location of the ovary near the testes, in the posterior quarter of the body, far caudad of the acetabulum, and the enlargement of the distal portion of the uterus into a thin-walled, non-muscular sac.The near-cosmopolitan species, Brachylaemus (Brachylaemus ) advena Dujardin, 1843, is reported from the small intestine of an endemic rodent, the Highland Spiny Rat, Mus mayori.

Eight nematode species, all of which have been named before, are reported from 6 host species which are endemic to Ceylon and nearly all confined to the upper montane zone (above 5 000 ft.). A Rhabdias sp. and Entomelas sp. are reported from the lizard Calotes nigrilabris; Kalicephalus brachycephalus from the colubrid snake Aspidura trachyprocta ; Cosmocercoides rickae from Calotes nigrilabris, from the horn-nosed lizard Ceratophora stoddarti and from the frog Rhacophorus microtympanum; Strongyluris chamaeleonis from Cophotis ceylanica and Ceratophora stoddarti; Strongyluris calotis from Calotes nigrilabris; Meteterakis longispiculata from the hump-nosed lizard Lyriocephalus scutatus collected in Kandy (elevation 1 674 ft.) ; and Meteterakis baylisi from Ceratophora stoddarti. Cosmocercoides rickae, Strongyluris calotis and Meteterakis baylisi are confined to Ceylon. The fact that the nematode Cosmocercoides rickae is found in Ceylon in an endemic frog and relict lizards, appears to throw light on the discovery of the acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus serendibensis in one of the relict lizards in Ceylon while a closely related species A. madagascariensis occurs in a Rhacophorus sp. in Madagascar.Kalicephalus brachycephalus, which occurs in several snakes in the Oriental region, appears to be poorly adapted to the almost relic Aspidura trachyprocta in Ceylon.There appears to be no evidence for regarding Meteterakis cophotis as being different from M. longispiculata. It is therefore regarded as a synonym of the latter species which was originally reported from a gecko in Java. The case for synonymising these two species is made more plausible when one considers the fact that one of the lyriocephaline host genera, namely Cophotis, is represented in Sumatra and Java as well by the species Cophotis sumatrana.
