Journal ArticleDOI
Exercise training increases size of hippocampus and improves memory
Kirk I. Erickson,Michelle W. Voss,Ruchika Shaurya Prakash,Chandramallika Basak,Amanda N. Szabo,Laura Chaddock,Jennifer S. Kim,Susie Heo,Heloisa Alves,Siobhan M. White,Thomas R. Wójcicki,Emily L. Mailey,Victoria J. Vieira,Stephen A. Martin,Brandt D. Pence,Jeffrey A. Woods,Edward McAuley,Arthur F. Kramer +17 more
TL;DR: It is shown that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the anterior hippocampus, leading to improvements in spatial memory, and that increased hippocampal volume is associated with greater serum levels of BDNF, a mediator of neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Is Associated with Age-Related Decline in Hippocampal Volume
Kirk I. Erickson,Ruchika Shaurya Prakash,Michelle W. Voss,Laura Chaddock,Susie Heo,Molly E. McLaren,Brandt D. Pence,Stephen A. Martin,Victoria J. Vieira,Jeffrey A. Woods,Edward McAuley,Arthur F. Kramer +11 more
TL;DR: Serum BDNF is identified as a significant factor related to hippocampal shrinkage and memory decline in late adulthood and is associated with smaller hippocampi and poorer memory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exercise, inflammation, and innate immunity.
TL;DR: Several compelling potential mechanisms for the anti-inflammatory effect of exercise are presented, including loss of body fat, reductions in macrophage accumulation in adipose tissue, alteredmacrophage phenotype in adiposity tissue, exercise-induced muscle production of IL-6, or alterations in the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of exercise and low-fat diet on adipose tissue inflammation and metabolic complications in obese mice
Victoria J. Vieira,Rudy J. Valentine,Kenneth R. Wilund,Nirav Antao,Tracy Baynard,Jeffrey A. Woods +5 more
TL;DR: Compared with LFD, EX attenuated increases in adiposity, hepatic steatosis, and adipose MCP-1 expression from 6 to 12 wk, highlighting the importance of both EX and LFD in preventing obesity-related metabolic disturbances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cardiovascular exercise training extends influenza vaccine seroprotection in sedentary older adults: the immune function intervention trial.
Jeffrey A. Woods,K. Todd Keylock,Thomas W. Lowder,Victoria J. Vieira,William Zelkovich,Sara A. Dumich,Kim Colantuano,Kristin L. Lyons,Kurt Leifheit,Marc D. Cook,Karen Chapman-Novakofski,Edward McAuley +11 more
TL;DR: To determine whether cardiovascular exercise training resulted in improved antibody responses to influenza vaccination in sedentary elderly people who exhibited poor vaccine responses, a large number of people were enrolled.
