TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the literature on sustainable freight transportation for perishable food products is presented using a structured approach termed as literature review analytics, which involves bibliometric and network analytics.
Abstract: Sustainable freight transportation (SFT) and cold-chain for perishable food products are the two most prominent areas where research is tremendously growing with increasing number of publications in various reputed journals. The area of SFT for perishable products is still in the nascent stage and not much explored. There are a number of published articles in the cold chain, but only a few have addressed the issue of sustainability. Perishable products require careful handling throughout their supply chain, which often requires reefer vehicles and cold storage facilities. They need to move fast in the supply chain as their longer stay would cause more energy consumption and higher perishability losses leading to increased cost and carbon footprints. The paper analyzes existing literature on this vital problem area and attempts to derive valuable insights using a structured approach termed as literature review analytics, which involves bibliometric and network analytics. This review analyzes the articles published during 1985–2017 using a set of keywords. Some of the key findings of this study unveil (1) research on SFT of perishable items is growing rapidly; (2) among all, Italy followed by the United States is the most contributing country in this research area. Further, network analytics is used to analyze the co-occurrence network for authors and keywords.

TL;DR: It can be concluded from the study that multi-modal freight transportation has the potential to improve the sustainability of freight transportation by reducing the costs, damages, emissions, traffic congestion and by increasing the speed of delivering the shipment.
Abstract: A sustainable freight transportation system involves freight processes that are economically efficient, socially inclusive and environment friendly. For enhancing sustainability in the freight operations, mode selection is a crucial strategic decision. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is selecting the best mode, or a combination of modes based on various criteria to carry shipments from origin to destination.,This study has used an integrated grey relational analysis based intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making process (GRA–IFP) and fuzzy multi-objective linear programming model. Three scenarios have been developed for analyzing sensitivity of decision variables with the variations in parameters under relevant conditions. A real case of Indian third-party logistics service provider has been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model.,The most relevant criterion emerged out in this study for multi-mode selection problem is costs. It can be concluded from the study that multi-modal freight transportation has the potential to improve the sustainability of freight transportation by reducing the costs, damages, emissions, traffic congestion and by increasing the speed of delivering the shipment. The sensitivity analysis further shows that road is the economical mode, whereas sea and rail together are the greenest as well as socially responsible modes of transportation.,This study provides an integrated tool, which can be used by freight transporters to decide upon the sustainable modes of transportation for their various shipments.

TL;DR: In this article, a Consensus Model (CM) with Fuzzy Evidential Reasoning Algorithm (FERA) has been used to determine the degree of importance of each Key Performance Indicators identified across three dimensions of sustainability.
Abstract: Sustainable freight transportation is aimed at reducing environmental emissions and social inequity along with economic inefficiency to drive the business. Lack of a continuous sustainability assessment and monitoring tool increases the reluctance of freight transporters to adopt world-class sustainability practices. This paper attempts to develop the performance index for a sustainable freight transportation system by innovatively integrating the Consensus Model (CM) with the Fuzzy Evidential Reasoning Algorithm (FERA). A CM has been used to determine the degree of importance of each Key Performance Indicators identified across three dimensions of sustainability. FERA has been used to aggregate subjective judgments with crisp quantitative values. This approach has a unique capability to handle various uncertainties related to impreciseness in decision-making. This study has demonstrated the use of an integrated approach for developing a performance index of the freight transportation system. Sensitivity Analysis of the model provides logical inferences and an understanding of the robustness of the model outputs. It can be interpreted from the results of the study that the firms with higher profitability in the market are focusing more on making their operations sustainable. A proportionate approach of firms towards the economic, environment, and societal well-being, may assist in achieving higher sustainability.

TL;DR: The process of TISM is outlined and the guidelines and thumb rules are provided to check the correctness of Tism at each step to help future modellers to translate their ill-structured mental models into sound theoretical models.
Abstract: Interpretive structural modelling (ISM) has been further interpreted in the form of total interpretive structural modelling (TISM). These are graphical models that represent the hierarchical relationships and help in better and precise conceptualization and theory building. ISM only interprets the nodes in a digraph, but TISM interprets both nodes and links. The errors observed in applications of ISM and TISM reported in past have acted as motivation for this paper to provide checks and guidelines for correctness of total interpretive structural models. The paper first gives an overview of past applications of TISM. The process of TISM is first outlined and then the guidelines and thumb rules are provided to check the correctness of TISM at each step. Some typical errors in TISM models and their modifications are discussed to help future modellers to translate their ill-structured mental models into sound theoretical models. A discussion on usefulness of TISM for big data analytics for theory building is provided and future directions of research are outlined.

TL;DR: This is the first study that analyzes the inhibitors of SMED by utilizing TISM approach and highlights the significance of TISM over conventional interpretive structural modeling (ISM) in order to provide interpretation for direct as well as significant transitive linkages in a directed graph.
Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the methodology of total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) in order to provide interpretation for direct as well as significant transitive linkages in a directed graph. Design/methodology/approach This study begins by unfolding the concepts and advantages of TISM. The step-by-step methodology of TISM is exemplified by employing it to analyze the mutual dependence among inhibitors of smartphone manufacturing ecosystem development (SMED). Cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to the classification analysis is also performed to graphically represent these inhibitors based on their driving power and dependence. Findings This study highlights the significance of TISM over conventional interpretive structural modeling (ISM). The inhibitors of SMED are explored by reviewing existing literature and obtaining experts’ opinions. TISM is employed to classify these inhibitors in order to devise a five-level hierarchical structure based on their driving power and dependence. Practical implications This study facilitates decision makers to take required actions to mitigate these inhibitors. Inhibitors (with strong driving power), which occupy the bottom level in the TISM hierarchy, require more attention from top management and effective monitoring of these inhibitors can assist in achieving the organizations’ goals. Originality/value By unfolding the benefits of TISM over ISM, this study is an endeavor to develop insights toward utilization of TISM for modeling inhibitors of SMED. This paper elaborates step-by-step procedure to perform TISM and hence makes it simple for researchers to understand its concepts. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that analyzes the inhibitors of SMED by utilizing TISM approach.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a comprehensive framework for the implementation of traceability-based food logistics system based on critical success factor (CSF) theory and multiple stakeholders' view on ensuring the security of quality food.
Abstract: Economic growth of a nation depends upon its capability to ensure the security of safe and quality food to its citizens. Despite having the vital role of food security in the growth, emerging economies are facing a number of challenges in their food logistics system. One of the most attention-seeking challenges is the management of security and safety of food commodities in food logistics. The prime concern is to monitor food quality throughout its supply chain and track the physical movement till it reaches end-consumers. This requires implementation of an effective and efficient traceability system. The successful implementation of traceability system requires consideration of multiple stakeholders’ perspectives. On the basis of critical success factor (CSF) theory and multiple stakeholders’ view on ensuring the security of quality food, this study proposes a comprehensive framework for implementation of traceability-based food logistics system. It attempts to identify and classify various CSFs necessary for the implementation of traceability system using a questionnaire-based survey followed by exploratory factor analysis. Further, an analysis of inter-relationships among the statistically significant CSFs is performed using total interpretive structural modeling, which considers multiple stakeholders’ views. The study helps in developing a comprehensive understanding of directional inter-relationships among CSFs and provides significant insights related to ways to improve consumer satisfaction through safe and quality food in food logistics.
