This paper performs an extensive review on control schemes and architectures applied to dc microgrids (MGs). It covers multilayer hierarchical control schemes, coordinated control strategies, plug-and-play operations, stability and active damping aspects, as well as nonlinear control algorithms. Islanding detection, protection, and MG clusters control are also briefly summarized. All the mentioned issues are discussed with the goal of providing control design guidelines for dc MGs. The future research challenges, from the authors’ point of view, are also provided in the final concluding part.

Review on Control of DC Microgrids and Multiple Microgrid Clusters

DC microgrids encounter the challenges of constant power loads (CPLs) and pulsed power loads (PPLs), which impose the requirements of fast dynamics, large stability margin, high robustness that cannot be easily addressed by conventional linear control methods. This necessitates the implementation of advanced control technologies in order to significantly improve the robustness, dynamic performance, stability and flexibility of the system. This article presents an overview of advanced control technologies for bidirectional dc/dc converters in dc microgrids. First, the stability issue caused by CPLs and the power balance issue caused by PPLs are discussed, which motivate the utilization of advanced control technologies for addressing these issues. Next, typical advanced control technologies including model predictive control, backstepping control, sliding-mode control, passivity-based control, disturbance estimation techniques, intelligent control, and nonlinear modeling approaches are reviewed. Then the applications of advanced control technologies in bidirectional dc/dc converters are presented for the stabilization of CPLs and accommodation of PPLs. Finally, advanced control techniques are explored in other high-gain nonisolated (e.g., interleaved, multilevel, cascaded) and isolated converters (e.g., dual active bridge) for high-power applications.

Review on Advanced Control Technologies for Bidirectional DC/DC Converters in DC Microgrids

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the major concepts associated with the μgrid, such as constant power load (CPL), incremental negative resistance or impedance (INR/I) and its dynamic behaviours on the μgrid, and power system distribution (PSD). In general, a μgrid is defined as a cluster of different types of electrical loads and renewable energy sources (distributed generations) under a unified controller within a certain local area. It is considered a perfect solution to integrate renewable energy sources with loads as well as with a traditional grid. In addition, it can operate with a conventional grid, for example, by energy sourcing or a controllable load, or it can operate alone as an islanding mode to feed required electric energy to a grid. Hence, one of the important issues regarding the μgrid is the constant power load that results from the tightly designed control when it is applied to power electronic converters. The effect of CPL is incremental negative resistance that impacts the power quality of a power system and makes it at negative damping. Also, in this paper, a comprehensive study on major control and compensation techniques for μgrid has been included to face the instability effects of constant power loads. Finally, the merits and limitations of the compensation techniques are discussed.

Constant power loads (CPL) with microgrids: problem definition, stability analysis and compensation techniques

The negative impedance characteristics of a constant power load (CPL) can easily lead to the instability of the DC bus voltage. To improve the stability of the DC bus voltage, an adaptive backstepping sliding mode control strategy for a boost converter with the CPL in DC microgrid is proposed. First, to carry out the backstepping control, the zero dynamic stability of the system under different output functions is studied by using input-output exact feedback linearization theory. The model is transformed into a linear system in Brunovsky canonical form, which solves the nonlinear problem caused by the CPL and the non-minimum phase problem of the boost converter. Then, under the premise of ensuring large signal stability, an adaptive mechanism is introduced into the design of the backstepping sliding mode control. The adaptive backstepping sliding mode controller is designed by adaptively updating the switching gain in real time. Furthermore, the Lyapunov theory is used to prove the global asymptotic stability of the overall closed-loop system. Finally, the numerical simulation and experimental results show that the proposed control strategy has better dynamic regulation performance and stronger robustness compared with the conventional double closed-loop PI control method.

Adaptive Backstepping Sliding Mode Control for Boost Converter With Constant Power Load

Energy sources and multi-input DC-DC converters used in hybrid electric vehicle applications – A review

Tightly regulated power electronic converters show negative impedance characteristics and behave as a constant power load (CPL) which sink constant power from their input bus. This incremental negative impedance characteristics of tightly regulated point-of-load converters in multi-converter power systems have a destabilising effect on source converters and may destabilise the whole system. Similar phenomena also occur in many situations like dc microgrid, vehicular power system. Here, the authors present a robust pulse-width modulation-based sliding-mode controller for a dc/dc boost converter feeding the CPL in a typical dc microgrid scenario. A non-linear surface is proposed which ensures constant power to be delivered to the load. The existence of sliding mode and stability of the sliding surface are proved. The proposed controller is implemented using OPAL-RT real-time digital simulator on a laboratory prototype of dc/dc boost converter system. The effectiveness of the proposed sliding-mode controller is validated through simulation and experimental results under different operating conditions.

Robust sliding-mode control of dc/dc boost converter feeding a constant power load

This article presents emulation of a programmable power electronic, constant power load (CPL) using a dc/dc step-up (boost) converter. The converter is controlled by a robust sliding mode controller (SMC). A novel switching surface is proposed to ensure a required power sunk by the converter. The proposed dc CPL is simple in design, has fast dynamic response and high accuracy, and offers an inexpensive alternative to study converters for cascaded dc distribution power system applications. Furthermore, the proposed CPL is sufficiently robust against the input voltage variations. A laboratory prototype of the proposed dc CPL has been developed and validated with SMC realised through OPAL-RT platform. The capability of the proposed dc CPL is confirmed via experimentations in varied scenarios.
