TL;DR: As duas estrategias do programa educativo em diabetes foram efetivas, porem a educacao em grupo apresentou melhores resultados de controle glicemico do que a individual.
Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of individual and group strategies in a diabetes education program. METHODS: A total of 104 type-2 diabetes outpatients enrolled in an education program of a teaching hospital in Belo Horizonte, Southeastern Brazil, were randomly selected and assigned to two different education strategies: group education (54 subjects) and individual education (50 subjects). Group education comprised three monthly sessions, which involved play and interactive dynamics. In parallel, a second group received individual education. Subjects were follow up for six months during 2006 and they were evaluated using specific questionnaires: knowledge of diabetes, psychological attitudes, change in behavior, quality of life. Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline, three and six months of intervention. RESULTS: Mean age was 60.6 years. The results of group and individual education were similar in the assessment tests of attitude, change of behavior and quality of life. A reduction in HbA1c levels was seen in both groups, but a statistically significant difference (p=0.012) was found only in the group education. CONCLUSIONS: Both strategies of diabetes education were effective, however, group education was more effective than individual education for blood glucose control.

TL;DR: The data demonstrate that control programmes based on the examination of a single KK slide, as the case in Brazil, tend to underestimate significantly the prevalence and overestimate infection intensity and indicate that the possible solution of this problem lies in targeted mass treatment including age groups with the highest proportions of those infected.

TL;DR: The strategy can be characterized as an educational tool from the perspective of health promotion and disease prevention and control and a better understanding of the participants' experience with their illness.
Abstract: This paper presents and discusses an educational strategy implemented in a specialized hospital clinic. The goal was to stimulate individuals to reflect on their everyday lifestyles as related to their disease, specifically diabetes mellitus. The strategy can be characterized as an educational tool from the perspective of health promotion and disease prevention and control. The experience was implemented on an interactive basis (health professionals and individual patients) with educational games in operative groups. Pedagogical techniques were used: orientation concerning diabetes mellitus, individual consultation, the operative group, and educational games (communications and learning). The techniques enabled participants to improve knowledge and exchange experiences. In addition, the health professionals gained a better understanding of the participants' experience with their illness.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present protocols for the FLOTAC basic, dual and double techniques, which are promising new multivalent, sensitive, accurate and precise methods for qualitative and quantitative copromicroscopic analysis.
Abstract: Accurate diagnosis of parasitic infections is of pivotal importance for both individual patient management and population-based studies, such as drug efficacy trials and surveillance of parasitic disease control and elimination programs, in both human and veterinary public health. In this study, we present protocols for the FLOTAC basic, dual and double techniques, which are promising new multivalent, sensitive, accurate and precise methods for qualitative and quantitative copromicroscopic analysis. These various methods make use of the FLOTAC apparatus, a cylindrical device with two 5-ml flotation chambers, which allows up to 1 g of stool to be prepared for microscopic analysis. Compared with currently more widely used diagnostic methods for parasite detection in animals (e.g., McMaster and Wisconsin techniques) and humans (e.g., Kato-Katz and ether-based concentration techniques), the FLOTAC techniques show higher sensitivity and accuracy. All FLOTAC techniques can be performed on fresh fecal material as well as preserved stool samples, and require approximately 12-15 min of preparation time before microscopic analysis.

TL;DR: In this article, the importance of education actions in health is highlighted as an integrating strategy of a collective knowledge that translates in the individual his autonomy and emancipation, based on this comprehension the study aims to reflect on the principle of the integrality as an axis director of the education actions.
Abstract: We understand the integrality in people's care, groups and collectivity having the client as a historical, social and political subject, integrated to his family context, to the environment and the society in which he is inserted. In this scenery the importance of education actions in health is highlighted as an integrating strategy of a collective knowledge that translates in the individual his autonomy and emancipation. Based on this comprehension the study aims to reflect on the principle of the integrality as an axis director of the education actions in health. The education in health as a pedagogical and political process requests the development of a critical and reflexive thinking, allowing to reveal the reality and to propose transforming actions, while historical and social subject able to propose and to give opinions in the decisions of health for his own care, of his family and of the collectivity.
