Electric cargo cycles - A comprehensive review

For the first time, the critical worldwide problem of prioritizing zero-emission last-mile delivery (LMD) solutions for sustainable city logistics is addressed and solved in this article. It not only aims to help city logistics companies sustainably decarbonize urban freight distribution but also provide valuable practical guidelines. To evaluate zero-emission LMD solutions, this article presents a novel multicriteria group decision-making methodology with dual hesitant fuzzy (DHF) sets. First, we propose some improved operations on DHF elements and investigate their vital properties. Second, based on these operations, we develop DHF improved weighted averaging operator to overcome the drawbacks of the existing operators on DHF sets. Third, for measuring the weights of criteria, a new model called the cross-entropy-based optimization model (CEBOM) is developed. Fourth, for the rational aggregation of the preferences, we formulate a new method namely score-based double normalized measurement alternatives and ranking according to the compromise solution (SDNMARCOS). The proposed DNMARCOS method couples the linear and vector normalization techniques. It is composed of the complete compensatory model and the incomplete compensatory model. Thus, SDNMARCOS is more robust compared to the available state-of-the-art approaches. To exhibit the applicability of the proposed DHF-CEBOM-SDNMARCOS methodology in real-world settings, a case study for one of the largest Austrian logistics companies in Serbia is provided. The research findings show that electric light commercial vehicles are the best LMD solution. Also, it is recommended to consider electric cargo bikes as a viable mid-term solution. The superiority of the introduced methodology is demonstrated through the comparative investigation. 

A Dual Hesitant Fuzzy Sets-Based Methodology for Advantage Prioritization of Zero-Emission Last-Mile Delivery Solutions for Sustainable City Logistics

The impact of the use of cargo bicycles for delivery processes on the environment is undeniably positive: it leads to the reduction of pollutants, noise, and vibrations caused by traditional vehicles; decreases traffic jams; causes more effective use of public space; and others. But how should such an effect be measured? What tools should be used to justify the necessity for change to more sustainable means of transport? How can we improve the state of the environment considering the interests of logistics service providers? There is a large amount of scientific literature dedicated to this problem: by using different modeling approaches, authors attempt to address the issue of sustainable transport. This paper conducts a literature review in the field of green cargo deliveries, investigates the benefits and drawbacks of integrating cargo bikes in urban logistics schemes, and examines methodologies and techniques for evaluating the impact of using cargo bicycles on the environment. By providing an opportunity to get acquainted with the situation in the sphere of green deliveries, the authors aim to encourage a breakthrough in the field of sustainable transport that may be achieved by using cargo bikes in modern cities. We review the existing approaches and tools for modeling transport emissions and state the significant positive environmental consequences.

Sustainable green products and services garner more attention from companies and enterprises that aim to succeed and grow in highly competitive markets by imposing less harms on the environment and ecosystems. Last-mile delivery from local distribution centers to customers plays an essential role in the retail business. Retail companies are leaning towards implementing green, efficient transportation methods, such as drones, in their last-mile delivery operations for reasons of ecological conservation. Accordingly, researchers have documented numerous research findings on last-mile drone delivery in recent years. This literature review selected a collection of articles mostly from 2011 to 2022 and reviewed them in terms of key technical challenges, such as routing, cargo distribution optimization, battery management, data communication, and environmental protection. These challenges are interrelated in a sense of achieving eco-friendly, efficient, lean, last-mile drone delivery. The selection of these technical challenges is based on the top challenges discussed in the literature.

Last-Mile Drone Delivery: Past, Present, and Future

Efficient vehicle routing is a major concern for any supply chain, especially when dealing with last-mile deliveries in highly urbanized areas. In this paper problems considering last-mile delivery in areas with the restrictions of motorized traffic are described and different types of cargo bikes are reviewed. The paper describes methods developed in order to solve a combination of problems for cargo bicycle logistics, including efficient packing, routing and load-dependent speed constraints. Proposed models apply mathematical descriptions of problems, including the Knapsack Problem, Traveling Salesman Problem and Traveling Thief Problem. Based on synthetically generated data, we study the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. Models described in this paper are implemented in Python programming language and will be further developed and used for solving the problems of electric cargo bikes’ routing under real-world conditions.

Identifying the Optimal Packing and Routing to Improve Last-Mile Delivery Using Cargo Bicycles

Electric cargo bicycles have become a popular mode of transport for last-mile goods deliveries under conditions of restricted traffic in urban areas. The indispensable elements of the cargo bike delivery systems are loading hubs: they serve as intermediate points between vans and bikes ensuring loading, storage, and e-vehicle charging operations. The choice of the loading hub location is one of the basic problems to be solved when designing city logistics systems that presume the use of electric bicycles. The paper proposes an approach to justifying the location of a loading hub based on computer simulations of the delivery process in the closed urban area under the condition of stochastic demand for transport services. The developed mathematical model considers consignees and loading hubs as vertices in the graph representing the transport network. A single request for transport services is described based on the set of numeric parameters, among which the most significant are the size of the consignment, its dimensions, and the time interval between the current and the previous requests for deliveries. The software implementation of the developed model in Python programming language was used to simulate the process of goods delivery by e-bikes for two cases—the synthetically generated rectangular network and the real-world case of the Old Town district in Krakow, Poland. The loading hub location was substantiated based on the simulation results from a set of alternative locations by using the minimum of the total transport work as the efficiency criterion. The obtained results differ from the loading hub locations chosen with the use of classical rectilinear and center-of-gravity methods to solve a simple facility location problem.

Substantiation of Loading Hub Location for Electric Cargo Bikes Servicing City Areas with Restricted Traffic

Energy costs account for a significant proportion of total costs in production systems. Since energy is becoming an increasingly expensive resource, therefore, it is critical to consume it as efficiently as possible. Focusing on energy efficiency is also important in terms of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the effects of other pollutants on the environment. One of the possible ways for businesses to reduce energy consumption is to use available transportation means as efficiently as possible. In the operational phase, this can be achieved by reducing unnecessary transport, selecting the most efficient delivery routes, and by optimized assignment of available vehicles to transportation orders. We present in this article a novel dynamic assignment of transportation orders to fleet with energy minimization criterion in internal transport system of a printing company. The novelty of the proposed model is that, in contrast to most existing models, it can handle a heterogeneous fleet of human-operated and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). The minimization of the energy consumption by transportation vehicles was modeled with reference to VDI 2198 standard. The need for such a model is justified by the fact that it better reflects a real production environment in many companies. The proposed optimization model was tested in simulation experiments imitating real production conditions in a large web printing house. The obtained results show that the proposed model allows for a significant reduction of energy consumption in internal transportation. The proposed model is general enough to be used in various companies with a heterogeneous fleet of internal transportation vehicles. In addition, the energy consumption factor VDI for AMRs has been determined, which can be useful in solving various problems related to energy optimization of internal transportation.
