Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. What is modal logic

This is a review of Collected Works of John Tate. Parts I, II, edited by Barry Mazur and Jean-Pierre Serre. American Mathematical Society, Providence, Rhode Island, 2016. For several decades it has been clear to the friends and colleagues of John Tate that a “Collected Works” was merited. The award of the Abel Prize to Tate in 2010 added impetus, and finally, in Tate’s ninety-second year we have these two magnificent volumes, edited by Barry Mazur and Jean-Pierre Serre. Beyond Tate’s published articles, they include five unpublished articles and a selection of his letters, most accompanied by Tate’s comments, and a collection of photographs of Tate. For an overview of Tate’s work, the editors refer the reader to [4]. Before discussing the volumes, I describe some of Tate’s work. 1. Hecke L-series and Tate’s thesis Like many budding number theorists, Tate’s favorite theorem when young was Gauss’s law of quadratic reciprocity. When he arrived at Princeton as a graduate student in 1946, he was fortunate to find there the person, Emil Artin, who had discovered the most general reciprocity law, so solving Hilbert’s ninth problem. By 1920, the German school of algebraic number theorists (Hilbert, Weber, . . .) together with its brilliant student Takagi had succeeded in classifying the abelian extensions of a number field K: to each group I of ideal classes in K, there is attached an extension L of K (the class field of I); the group I determines the arithmetic of the extension L/K, and the Galois group of L/K is isomorphic to I. Artin’s contribution was to prove (in 1927) that there is a natural isomorphism from I to the Galois group of L/K. When the base field contains an appropriate root of 1, Artin’s isomorphism gives a reciprocity law, and all possible reciprocity laws arise this way. In the 1930s, Chevalley reworked abelian class field theory. In particular, he replaced “ideals” with his “idèles” which greatly clarified the relation between the local and global aspects of the theory. For his thesis, Artin suggested that Tate do the same for Hecke L-series. When Hecke proved that the abelian L-functions of number fields (generalizations of Dirichlet’s L-functions) have an analytic continuation throughout the plane with a functional equation of the expected type, he saw that his methods applied even to a new kind of L-function, now named after him. Once Tate had developed his harmonic analysis of local fields and of the idèle group, he was able prove analytic continuation and functional equations for all the relevant L-series without Hecke’s complicated theta-formulas. The collected works

We develop a theoretical model to describe and explain variation in corporate governance among advanced capitalist economies, identifying the social relations and institutional arrangements that shape who controls corporations, what interests corporations serve, and the allocation of rights and responsibilities among corporate stakeholders. Our “actor-centered” institutional approach explains firm-level corporate governance practices in terms of institutional factors that shape how actors' interests are defined (“socially constructed”) and represented. Our model has strong implications for studying issues of international convergence.

Segundo a pressuposicao de consistencia classica, as contradicoes tem um cara[c]ter explosivo; uma vez que estejam presentes em uma teoria, tudo vale, e nenhum raciocinio sensato pode entao ter lugar. Uma logica e paraconsistente se ela rejeita uma tal pressuposicao, e aceita ao inves que algumas teorias inconsistentes conquanto nao-triviais facam perfeito sentido. A? Logicas da Inconsistencia Formal, LIFs, formam uma classe de logicas paraconsistentes particularmente expressivas nas quais a nocao meta-teonca de consistencia pode ser internalizada ao nivel da linguagem obje[c]to. Como consequencia, as LIFs sao capazes de recapturar o raciocinio consistente pelo acrescimo de assuncoes de consistencia apropriadas. Assim, por exemplo, enquanto regras classicas tais como o silogismo disjuntivo (de A e {nao-,4)-ou-13, infira B) estao fadadas a falhar numa logica paraconsistente (pois A e (nao-A) poderiam ambas ser verdadeiras para algum A, independentemente de B), elas podem ser recuperadas por uma LIF se o conjunto das premissas for ampliado pela presuncao de que estamos raciocinando em um ambiente consistente (neste caso, pelo acrescimo de (consistente-.A) como uma hipotese adicional da regra). A presente monografia introduz as LIFs e apresenta diversas ilustracoes destas logicas e de suas propriedades, mostrando que tais logicas constituem com efeito a maior parte dos sistemas paraconsistentes da literatura. Diversas formas de se efe[c]tuar a recaptura do raciocinio consistente dentro de tais sistemas inconsistentes sao tambem ilustradas Em cada caso, interpretacoes em termos de semânticas polivalentes, de traducoes possiveis ou modais sao fornecidas, e os problemas relacionados a provisao de contrapartidas algebricas para tais logicas sao examinados. Logics of Formal Inconsistency

A thorough investigation of the foundations of paraconsistent logics. Relations between logical principles are formally studied, a novel notion of consistency is introduced, the logics of formal inconsistency, and the subclasses of C-systems and dC-systems are defined and studied. An enormous variety of paraconsistent logics in the literature is shown to constitute C-systems.

In this article, we examine an argument-based semantics called semi-stable semantics Semi-stable semantics is quite close to traditional stable semantics in the sense that every stable extension is also a semi-stable extension One of the advantages of semi-stable semantics is that for finite argumentation frameworks there always exists at least one semi-stable extension Furthermore, if there also exists at least one stable extension, then the semi-stable extensions coincide with the stable extensions Semi-stable semantics can be seen as a general approach that can be applied to abstract argumentation, as well as to fields like default logic and answer set programming, yielding an interpretation with properties very similar to those of paraconsistent logic, including the properties of crash resistance and backward compatibility

Semi-stable semantics

This paper presents a unified treatment of the propositional and first-order many-valued logics through the method of tableaux. It is shown that several important results on the proof theory and model theory of those logics can be obtained in a general way.We obtain, in this direction, abstract versions of the completeness theorem, model existence theorem (using a generalization of the classical analytic consistency properties), compactness theorem and Lowenheim-Skolem theorem.The paper is completely self-contained and includes examples of application to particular many-valued formal systems.
