Journal ArticleDOI
Risk Factors for Rapid Kidney Function Decline Among African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study (JHS).
Bessie A. Young,Bessie A. Young,Ronit Katz,L. Ebony Boulware,Bryan Kestenbaum,Ian H. de Boer,Ian H. de Boer,Wei Wang,Tibor Fülöp,Nisha Bansal,Cassianne Robinson-Cohen,Michael Griswold,Neil R. Powe,Jonathan Himmelfarb,Adolfo Correa +14 more
TL;DR: Results did not support associations of waist circumference, C-reactive protein level, and physical activity with rapid decline, but interventions targeting potentially modifiable factors may help reduce the incidence of kidney failure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cigarette Smoking and Chronic Kidney Disease in African Americans in the Jackson Heart Study.
Michael E. Hall,Wei Wang,Victoria Okhomina,Mohit Agarwal,John E. Hall,Albert W. Dreisbach,Luis A. Juncos,Michael D. Winniford,Thomas J. Payne,Rose Marie Robertson,Aruni Bhatnagar,Bessie A. Young +11 more
TL;DR: In a large African American cohort, current cigarette smoking was independently associated with RRF decline in a dose‐dependent manner and there was evidence of increased inflammation (C‐reactive protein) in current smokers, suggesting a potential mechanism for these relationships.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cardiovascular Disease Burden and Socioeconomic Correlates: Findings From the Jackson Heart Study.
Yuan-I Min,Pramod Anugu,Kenneth R. Butler,Tara A. Hartley,Stanford Mwasongwe,Arnita F. Norwood,Mario Sims,Wei Wang,Karen Winters,Adolfo Correa +9 more
TL;DR: Except for myocardial infarction in men, CVD burden in the JHS cohort was higher than expected and a strong inverse socioeconomic gradient of CVD was also observed within the J HS cohort.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of Serum Creatinine Calibration on Estimated Renal Function in African Americans: The Jackson Heart Study
Wei Wang,Michael Griswold,Bessie A. Young,Bessie A. Young,Ian H. de Boer,Ian H. de Boer,Ronit Katz,Tibor Fülöp,Adolfo Correa,L. Ebony Boulware +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a Deming regression model was chosen to optimally calibrate baseline serum creatinine measurements in the Jackson Heart study (JHs), and the calibrated values provided a lower CKD prevalence estimate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Depressive Symptoms and Risk of Cardiovascular Events in Blacks Findings From the Jackson Heart Study
Emily C. O'Brien,Melissa A. Greiner,Mario Sims,Natalie Chantelle Hardy,Wei Wang,Eyal Shahar,Adrian F. Hernandez,Lesley H. Curtis +7 more
TL;DR: In a community-based cohort of blacks, major depressive symptoms were associated with greater risks of incident stroke and CHD after adjustment for clinical and behavioral risk factors.
