Abstract: Recently, the single metal wire (SW) has become attractive for its potential applications in the terahertz and higher frequency range. However, as the most simple and typical surface plasmon polariton (SPP) transmission line, its study seems far from enough. Many important transmission behaviours have not been explained satisfactorily from the viewpoint of physics. In this paper, making use of the modified Drude model (MDM) based on the Sommerfeld theory, the transmission behaviours of SPPs along SW are systemically investigated theoretically. Some important physical phenomena such as the mode transformation, the lifetime of the radiative mode and the resonance frequency are revealed, and their mechanisms are explored. The results obtained in the paper will facilitate a general understanding of the features and the physical essence of the SPP transmission, not only for SW itself but also for other SPP transmission lines.

Abstract: A physical phenomenon has been found: in a structure of nanometal film with dielectric-medium loading, the surface polaritons excited by a uniformly moving electron bunch can be transformed into Cherenkov radiation with intensity enhancement in the medium. Based on this mechanism, the surface polariton Cherenkov light radiation source is presented and explored in the Letter. The results show that surface polariton Cherenkov light radiation source can generate radiation, from visible light to the ultraviolet frequency regime and the radiation power density can reach or even exceed 10(8) W/cm(2) depending on the beam energy and current density. It is a tunable and miniature light radiation source promising to be integrated on a chip and built into a light radiation source array.

Abstract: The concept and experimental results of a light source given in a recent paper by Adamo et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 113901 (2009)] are very interesting and attractive. Our paper presents detailed theoretical investigations on such a light source, and our results confirm that the mechanism of the light radiation experimentally detected in the published paper is a special kind of diffraction radiation in a waveguide with nanoscale periodic structure excited by an electron beam. The numerical calculations based on our theory and digital simulations agree well with the experimental results. This mechanism of diffraction radiation is of significance in physics and optics, and may bring good opportunities for the generation of electromagnetic waves from terahertz to light frequency regimes.

Abstract: We analyze a free electron terahertz wave radiation source with two-section periodical waveguide structure (PWS), where the first section (section-I) is used to pre-modulate the electron beam and the second section (section-II) is for terahertz wave generation. By means of theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the starting current density of the beam-wave interaction in section-II can be significantly reduced provided that the operation frequency is the harmonic of electron beam’s pre-modulation frequency. This kind of source can generate relatively high power terahertz wave radiation but only need moderate beam current density. And it may have great potential application in developing the compact and high power terahertz wave radiation source.

Abstract: In this paper we show that under the excitation of a line current of electron beam, a dielectric medium loading in the lower half-space of a sub-wavelength hole array brings essential changes to the diffraction radiation. In the lower half-space, the surface wave becomes a radiation wave. The fundamental space harmonic is transformed into Cherenkov radiation with unique characteristics and the first negative space harmonic is converted into a radiation wave with the angle of Smith–Purcell radiation. Consequently, in the lower half-space interference happens due to these two kinds of diffraction radiation. The results of numerical calculations based on analytical theory agree well with that obtained by computer simulations. The mechanism may have good potential applications in modern physics.

Abstract: A distributed antenna and backhaul system provide network connectivity for a small cell deployment. Rather than building new structures, and installing additional fiber and cable, embodiments described herein disclose using high-bandwidth, millimeter-wave communications and existing power line infrastructure. Above ground backhaul connections via power lines and line-of-sight millimeter-wave band signals as well as underground backhaul connections via buried electrical conduits can provide connectivity to the distributed base stations. An overhead millimeter-wave system can also be used to provide backhaul connectivity. Modules can be placed onto existing infrastructure, such as streetlights and utility poles, and the modules can contain base stations and antennas to transmit the millimeter-waves to and from other modules.

Abstract: A distributed antenna system is provided that frequency shifts the output of one or more microcells to a 60 GHz or higher frequency range for transmission to a set of distributed antennas. The cellular band outputs of these microcell base station devices are used to modulate a 60 GHz (or higher) carrier wave, yielding a group of subcarriers on the 60 GHz carrier wave. This group will then be transmitted in the air via analog microwave RF unit, after which it can be repeated or radiated to the surrounding area. The repeaters amplify the signal and resend it on the air again toward the next repeater. In places where a microcell is required, the 60 GHz signal is shifted in frequency back to its original frequency (e.g., the 1.9 GHz cellular band) and radiated locally to nearby mobile devices.
