TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical solution developed by Verruijt is adopted to calculate the lateral displacements attributable to the expansion of the cylindrical cavity, and an empirical equation that accounts for the jetting parameters and soil properties (soil type and its undrained shear strength) is developed to determine the radius of the plastic zone.
Abstract: The installation of jet-grouted columns in soft ground can induce lateral displacement resulting from injection of a great amount of water and grout into the ground, which may then lead on to further significant effects. This paper presents an approach to estimate the lateral displacement due to the installation of a jet-grouted column in clayey soils. Assuming that the installation of a jet-grouted column is represented by the expansion of a cylindrical cavity with a uniform radial stress applied at the plastic–elastic interface in a half-plane, the analytical solution developed by Verruijt is adopted in this study to calculate the lateral displacements attributable to the expansion of the cylindrical cavity. An empirical equation that accounts for the jetting parameters (jetting pressure, flow rate of the fluid and rod withdrawal rate) and soil properties (soil type and its undrained shear strength) has been developed to determine the radius of the plastic zone. Three case histories analysed in this pap...

TL;DR: In this article, the failure modes of the disc cutter in heterogeneous ground conditions were summarized based on the observed wear data from field, including uniform and non-uniform disc cutter wear, and breakage of cutter ring.
Abstract: When shield tunnelling is constructed in complex geological conditions using a tunnel boring machine, the disc cutter in the cutterhead easily wears to the failure state, particularly when the ground conditions are heterogeneous. This paper summarises the failure modes of the disc cutter in heterogeneous ground conditions into three categories, based on the observed wear data from field: (1) uniform disc cutter wear, (2) non-uniform disc cutter wear, and (3) breakage of cutter ring. Subsequently, the stress state of a disc cutter in the heterogeneous ground was analysed and the effective factors were investigated. The relationships between friction energy during cutting, working status of the machine and the characteristics of the geological conditions were evaluated. Based on the stress analysis and friction energy, a prediction model was proposed. The proposed model was applied to two field case studies: pertaining to uniform and mixed-face ground conditions, for which the empirical coefficient k for energy transfer was also determined. The preliminary results from this research indicated that the proposed model was valid for both homogeneous and heterogeneous ground conditions. Further case studies provided by co-operators are expected to improve the effectiveness of the proposed model.

TL;DR: In this article, the micro-scale structural characteristics of the loess exposed to acetic acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium sulfate respectively are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy tests.
Abstract: Soil contamination not only can cause environmental problems but also lead to a notable change in the mechanical properties of soil. Loess widely distributed over North-West (NW) China is featured with the metastable structure, and chemical contaminants produced especially during the rapid development of NW China in recent years seriously threaten the fragile loess environments. When exposed to chemical contaminants, the impacts on the microstructural characteristics of the loess and the resultant mechanical properties are deemed critical for land reclamation in NW China. In light of this, the microscale structural characteristics of the loess exposed to acetic acid, phosphoric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium sulfate respectively are studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy tests. Additionally, their resultant macroscale mechanical properties are determined by direct shear tests. The deterioration mechanism regarding the microscale structural characteristics when exposed to the contaminants is revealed, and the resultant macroscale mechanical properties present a good correspondence with the deteriorated microscale structural characteristics. The findings of this work provide some guideposts for contaminated land reclamation in NW China.

Abstract: This section offers suggestions related to helping a student deal with bullying in schools, as well as creating an environment where that individual can easily return to the school community. It also mentions the significance of the method 'Shared Responsibility' in dealing with the situation.
